Tailfin recently surprised bikepackers worldwide by announcing they were finally bringing some color to their bags. Through the Colours Collection, the brand is no longer sticking to its black Hypalon aesthetic. Instead, they’re branching into soft, earth tones in two patterns they named Candy Mountain and Kentucky Bluegrass. In their latest YouTube video, we get a designer’s view of the Colours Collection and why they decided to diversify their palette.

Though some might think adding color to production bags is little more than picking a few complementary tones, the Tailfin team does a great job of showing viewers why it’s much more complex. Beyond finding a series of colors that work well with modern bikes, the primary fabric used on their black bags is difficult to dye. So, they had to find new solutions to achieve their desired aesthetic while maintaining their standard-setting build quality.

The brand also rooted its Kentucky Bluegrass collection in a quirk of the people who have grown alongside Tailfin. Boru McCullagh, a renowned bikepacker and host of their Overnighters series, doesn’t like sleeping on a pad. So, when he crossed the United States at the end of his global tour, he was delighted to sleep in a field of soft Kentucky Bluegrass, which provided a comfortable spot to rest. These small but important touches ground the brand in experience and show that this product launch is more than a fresh color choice.
