Once a promising young player on the Baltimore Orioles and now a member of the Boston Red Sox, Adley Rutschman made history with his performance against his former team on Thursday night. 

Rutschman hit two home runs, both solo shots, as part of the Red Sox's 6-5 win in his return to Baltimore.

With his new team needing each of his home runs to defat his old team, Rutschman went yard in both the first and sixth innings. 

But his multi-homer meant more than just keeping the now 76-65 Red Sox in the playoff race. Rutschman became only the second player since at least 1900 to switch teams in the middle of a season and then homer multiple times in his first game against his former team during the same year.

Up until Rutschman, 28, Willis Otanez was the only player to ever accomplish the rare moment, doing so also against the Orioles for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Rutschman's two most recent home runs gives him three with Boston and 11 in total on the season. Struggling since being traded by Baltimore on Aug. 3, he has just six RBI and a .197 batting average in 16 games with the Red Sox. 

In 83 games split between both teams, Rutschman has 11 home runs, 53 RBI, 38 runs scored and 20 doubles with a slash line of .240/.320/.421. 

A three-time All-Star, Rutschman's best season came in 2023 when he earned a Silver Slugger Award for posting still career highs in home runs with 20 and RBI with 77. He even hit .277, his highest final average by far.
