The Athletics have a clear need as they look to remain in the playoff hunt.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the A's are looking to upgrade their rotation and are reportedly interested in Royals starter Kris Bubic. However, Nightengale also noted that the Royals are not looking to punt on the season just yet.

The A's rotation has battled injuries and ineffectiveness this season. Starters Luis Severino and Aaron Civale are both on the Injured List and are weeks away from a potential return. The A's have used 10 different starting pitchers, with their combined 4.77 ERA ranking 27th in the majors.

Kris Bubic may not be the answer for the Athletics

Bubic is also on the IL with left elbow soreness. He has begun a throwing program and is considered to be on track to return some time in June. He had posted a 4.11 ERA and a 1.232 WHiP over his 50.1 innings before landing on the IL, striking out 51 batters with 26 walks.

Although Bubic has been unable to replicate his All-Star showing from 2025, he would still be a solid option in the middle of a contending rotation if healthy. He would certainly be an upgrade for the A's as another dependable option to the rotation.

However, the A's need more than another middle-of-the-rotation arm if they are going to contend for a playoff berth. While adding Bubic would be a good start, he may not be enough for the A's to make that push to the postseason.
