Aston Villa's aim for next season should be to compete for the top five in the Premier League and to get to the latter stages of the Champions League.

After winning the Europa League, the Villans know that they can go deep in European competitions, but the next step is to do it in the Champions League against the best teams in the world.

Villa got to the quarter-finals of the competition in the 2024/25 campaign, losing to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain, and the semi-finals would be the next step.

In order to progress as a team, Unai Emery needs to add more quality to his squad and be ruthless when bringing players in and replacing starters next season.

With this in mind, Emiliano Buendia is one player who could find himself on the bench in the 2026/27 campaign, despite his impressive form this term.

Aston Villa eyeing deal to sign Bundesliga forward

The Argentine playmaker produced a goal and an assist against Freiburg in the Europa League last month, and ended the season with 11 goals and nine assists in all competitions.

Now, though, the club are looking at a potential move for a player who would arrive at Villa Park as an even better option at the top end of the pitch for Emery.

According to TEAMtalk, Aston Villa are one of a number of clubs lining up a possible swoop for Hoffenheim winger Bazoumana Toure in the summer transfer window.

The report claims that the Villans and Newcastle United are both 'very interested' in the Ivorian star and are keeping tabs on his situation heading into the window.

It adds, though, that Liverpool have already formally registered their interest in the Bundesliga attacker, whilst Manchester United are also keen on a deal for him.

TEAMtalk reports that Hoffenheim are wanting a fee of around £43m for the 20-year-old talent, which means that Villa could push to win the race for bidding that much to see an offer accepted for his services.

Why Bazoumana Toure is an upgrade on Emi Buendia for Aston Villa

The Villans must now push to win the race for his signature ahead of Manchester United, Liverpool, and Newcastle United, because he could be an upgrade on Buendia.

Villa's Argentine attacking midfielder scored six goals and provided two assists in 36 appearances in the Premier League, which was a solid return for the former Norwich City star.

Toure, who was described as "explosive" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, delivered even more quality at the top end of the pitch for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, though, and could improve Emery's attack.

The Ivorian wing wizard created more than twice as much xA and more than twice as many 'big chances' as the Argentina international at league level this season, despite playing six fewer games.

Like Buendia, Toure can play on the left, on the right, or in the number ten position as an attacking midfielder, which means that he is a versatile forward who would fit in well at Villa.

Emery likes versatile attackers who can move into several positions across the pitch, like Jadon Sancho, Morgan Rogers, and Buendia, and Toure fits the bill, whilst adding a naturally left-footed player to the group.

The Bundesliga star could offer even more to Villa in the final third by creating more high-quality chances for the likes of Rogers and Ollie Watkins than Buendia does, based on their respective form this season.

At the age of 20, he is also nine years younger than Buendia and would offer more to the team as a long-term option who could grow and develop as a player over time, similar to the way that Rogers has since his move from Middlesbrough.

Therefore, Toure would be a fantastic signing in the short-term to improve the team for the Champions League, as an upgrade on Buendia, whilst also making sense in the long-term as a star with potential who could go on to grow in value over time.

Now, it is down to the board to pay the £43m asking price to see a bid accepted for the star, and then to convince him to turn down moves to other clubs to link up with Emery and his team next season.
