The long-awaited call-up of former No. 1 Toronto Blue Jays prospect Ricky Tiedemann has finally arrived. The Blue Jays have recalled the highly touted prospect from Triple-A Buffalo and have optioned right-handed reliever Chase Lee back to Triple-A. 

Lee has struggled to provide shutdown innings, and in his most recent performance, he allowed four earned runs on four hits and one walk in the Blue Jays' 7-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Aug. 13. 

It's been a long rehab journey for Tiedemann, a left-handed pitcher who underwent Tommy John surgery in July 2024.

While he's also faced setbacks that delayed his debut, his talent hasn't vanished as he carries upside that will help transform the Blue Jays' bullpen. He's made significant strides in his recovery and was activated off the injured list on Aug. 5. He will wear No. 33 for the Jays. 

He provides the Blue Jays with a left-handed reliever as they only have two lefties in the 'pen, Brendon Little and Mason Fluharty. The Blue Jays' bullpen has been taxed and overworked, and could use a pitcher who possesses an elite swing-and-miss slider and a fastball that tops at 99 mph.

Tiedemann is expected to provide a strong presence in the Blue Jays' bullpen for the remainder of the 2026 season. While Tommy John surgery sidelined him for all of 2024 and 2025, he's only 23 years old and still has so much more room to develop and grow. 

It will be paramount for him to remain healthy and work under a managed pitching workload. He deserves praise for continuing to battle through injuries and work towards his goal of pitching on the mound and making his MLB debut. 

It will be intriguing to see how Tiedemann handles his first big-league test. The Blue Jays remain one game out a final AL wild-card spot, something that didn't seem plausible following the All-Star break. If Tiedemann can bring his former dominance to the majors, it will help bolster the pen. The Blue Jays have won five consecutive series as well as nine games in August, demonstrated a much-improved performance. 

Overall, this is a huge moment for Tiedemann, a No. 29 prospect in MLB in 2024 who will look to showcase his resiliency and make his highly anticipated MLB debut with the Blue Jays.
