The Toronto Blue Jays have signed veteran pitcher Michael Lorenzen to a one-year deal. He was designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies on Aug. 17 and then officially released on Aug. 19. 

Lorenzen is a low-risk acquisition. The Blue Jays will cover a prorated portion of the major league minimum of the deal, and the Rockies will be responsible for the remaining $8 million that is left on his salary this season. 

Although he has a poor 3-11 record and 7.08 ERA across 25 starts with the Rockies this season, Lorenzen posted better numbers from 2022-25. During that timeframe, he has a 4.10 ERA across 93 starts and 522.2 innings pitched. But fans should also be mindful of the fact that Lorenzen didn't fit the environment of Coors field due to the Colorado elevation, which impacted his performance. 

In addition, if Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker can help Lorenzen rediscover his once serviceable form, it would help provide depth for the Blue Jays, who've dealt with a taxed pitching staff all season. They just lost Shane Bieber to the 15-day injured list on Tuesday, so Lorenzen acts as a much-needed reinforcement in the rotation while also providing insurance. 

Examining Michael Lorenzen's role with the Blue Jays 

Blue Jays manager John Schneider has claimed that Lorenzen is open to pitching in any role that's required, according to MLB.com's Brian Murphy. His role will remain flexible and could range from being a spot starter to a long reliever out of the pen. 

In addition to spending time with the Rockies, he was also an All-Star in 2023 with the Detroit Tigers and spent seven seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, where he started his career in MLB. 

While his numbers with the Rockies included an inflated 9.12 ERA at home, he performed better on the road with a 5.61 ERA. Pitching in a new environment may help him bounce back. 

In addition, Lorenzen owns a career 3.73 ERA as a relief pitcher, illustrating a stronger performance as a reliever. Overall, leaving Coors Field, which is known for being a hitter-friendly stadium, could help with his revival while simultaneously helping the Blue Jays with their injury-riddled rotation.
