Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThe Cleveland Cavaliers made a series of moves this week to acquire Peyton Watson via sign-and-trade from the Denver Nuggets and to re-sign James Harden. In acquiring Watson, Cleveland became hard-capped at the first apron. With Harden's contract reportedly set to start just north of $30 million, that leaves the Cavs without much wiggle room under their hard cap.
That has Cleveland weighing waiving-and-stretching the salary of Cam Whitmore, who as acquired as part of the five-team deal that landed Watson with the Cavs. Whitmore is set to make $5.4 million for this season. If the Cavaliers were to waive-and-stretch Whitmore, they'd take on cap hits of $1.8 million for the next three seasons. The move would save Cleveland roughly $3.6 million for this season.
The Cavs would need to then backfill the roster spot created by waiving-and-stretching Whitmore. Cleveland acquired Ismael Kamagate's draft rights in the five-team deal. The Cavs could potentially sign Kamagate to a rookie minimum deal to meet the roster minimums, while giving the team another frontcourt player.
