New York Mets interim manager Andy Green recently suggested that he will return to his role of serving as the club's senior vice president of player development shortly after the Mets finish their final game of the ongoing MLB season. 

That said, Green offered those comments before the Mets notched a 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres (67-59) on Monday evening that improved New York to 10-3 over its past 13 games. Despite that surprising run of form, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns revealed on Monday that he still expects Green to return to the front office later this year.

"My expectation, Andy’s expectation, is he’s going to rejoin the front office, and I have no reason to believe otherwise right now," Stearns said, per Mike Puma of the New York Post. 

The Mets fell to 47-66 before the trade deadline arrived on Aug. 3. Stearns largely dismantled the team's bullpen amid what became an expected fire sale for the last-place club, but the Mets have since improved to 57-69. 

New York's run of form since the deadline has understandably caused some to wonder if Stearns and big-spending team owner Steve Cohen would want Green to interview for the full-time job in October. However, Laura Albanese of Newsday noted that Green "likes the flexibility his old role afforded him, and the time he got to spend with his family." 

"They know him, he knows them," Stearns said about how Green’s working relationships with Mets players prevented the club from becoming a complete afterthought in August. "He also has some familiarity with our veteran players, and that wasn’t completely new to anyone as well. I think any time a manager steps into a new role, having those preexisting relationships is definitely beneficial."

On Monday, Stearns was asked if Green's tenure will impact what the Mets front office looks for in a new full-time manager.

"When we get to that point, I will be able to talk more broadly and holistically about what we would be looking for in the next manager," Stearns responded. "I don’t think right now is the right time to have those conversations."

For now, Green will look to keep the Mets rolling when New York hosts the Padres on Tuesday evening and on Wednesday afternoon.
