Duke freshman Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje has emerged as the early front-runner for the No. 1 pick in the 2028 NBA Draft, according to ESPN's Jeremy Woo. The 7-foot-2 forward will spend two seasons at Duke before becoming draft-eligible in 2028.

Boumtje Boumtje made his USA Basketball debut at the Under-17 World Cup in Istanbul, averaging 19.6 points, 10.9 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 2.1 blocks while shooting 59.8 percent from the field and 53.1 percent from three-point range. He earned tournament MVP honors while leading his team to a gold medal. Cameron Boozer, Jalen Green, Jahlil Okafor and Bradley Beal are past MVPs in the competition.

Born in 2009, Boumtje Boumtje will not be eligible for the draft until 2028, giving him a two-year developmental runway at Duke. He is the son of former Georgetown standout and NBA draft pick Ruben Boumtje Boumtje.

The younger Boumtje Boumtje grew up in the United States and spent the past three years developing at FC Barcelona, where he was considered one of Europe's top young talents. Duke lists him at 7-foot-2, combining rare size with perimeter skill and strong defensive instincts.

Scouts have suggested Boumtje Boumtje could reach the level of college impact set by predecessors Cooper Flagg or Cameron Boozer, though he will arrive at Duke a year younger than both. Some evaluators view him as that caliber of talent despite the different timeline.

His arrival is considered significant given the shortage of elite American big men in the pipeline, with added relevance for USA Basketball as it prepares to compete against Victor Wembanyama and France over the next decade. Boumtje Boumtje is regarded as the clear favorite to go No. 1 in 2028, though his adjustment to college basketball at 17 years old remains a storyline to watch this season.
