Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayCHICAGO –– The Dodgers getting swept by the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday was not the team’s only concern as it left Wrigley Field.
Star first baseman Freddie Freeman exited the series finale in the fifth inning of the team’s eventual 7-6 defeat, after getting hit on the right hand by a 90 mph fastball while fouling off a pitch up and out of the strike zone.
“That’s what I get,” Freeman quipped afterward, “for swinging at a ball at my face.”
The good news for the Dodgers: X-rays on Freeman’s hand came back negative, and both he and manager Dave Roberts expected the former MVP to be back in the team’s lineup on Friday for a series-opener in Arizona against the Diamondbacks.
“I feel alright,” Freeman said, while wearing a compression wrap to keep down swelling for the team’s upcoming Wednesday night flight. “Did some treatment [after the game and will] do some more treatment tomorrow. I should be good Friday … An hour’s worth of treatment [already has it] feeling much better.”
During Wednesday’s game, it was not immediately clear if Freeman had left with an injury, or because the Dodgers were facing what at that point was a five-run deficit.
Though the veteran All-Star was seen grimacing and looking at his wrist after the foul-ball swing, he remained in the box for the rest of his at-bat, which ended with a fly ball to center.
He had also already extended his hitting streak to 15 games by that point, having singled in the third inning to keep his batting average at a season-best .310 mark.
That ranks third in the National League behind Luis Arraez of the Philadelphia Phillies and Otto Lopez of the Miami Marlins. It has also made Freeman one of the Dodgers’ lone bright spots during a six-game losing streak that has allowed the Milwaukee Brewers to leap frog them for the best record in the majors.
Later in Wednesday’s game, Freeman’s absence loomed large during a comeback bid in the eighth inning that ultimately fell one run short.
After a three-run home run from Max Muncy and two-run drive from Shohei Ohtani earlier in the inning had gotten the Dodgers back within one, Kiké Hernández (who replaced Freeman at first base) came up in his spot with the tying run at second base and two outs.
However, he struck out to extinguish the threat, and send the Dodgers to a second-straight series sweep, both of which have come against fellow playoff contenders in the Cubs and Boston Red Sox.
“We have a great baseball team. We just haven’t played well the last week,” Freeman said afterward. “We’re going to take our positives. I know the fans probably don’t want to hear it but we’re going to take it. What the last couple innings looked like as an offense, hopefully we can carry that in. Our pitching’s been good. We just need to score more runs.”
Come Friday, the Dodgers are hopeful that Freeman will be part of that effort, and that Wednesday’s early exit doesn’t cause a more extended absence from the lineup.
