Buoyed by his latest win, Ryan Garcia has once again attempted to arrange a rematch with Gervonta Davis.

Garcia defended his WBC welterweight world title with a second-round knockout win over Conor Benn this past weekend in Las Vegas, cementing himself as one of the leading stars in US boxing.

While a big unification bout with WBA champion Teofimo Lopez was discussed immediately after the fight, Garcia has a hit-list and ‘Tank’ is high up on it.

Many things appear to stand in the way of the pair reigniting their rivalry, not least the weight disparity or that Davis has been inactive for over a year amidst serious legal issues outside of the ring.

Still, following a recent online interaction between the fighters, Garcia has now taken to social media to announce that discussions have moved forward, and appeared to suggest that he believes ‘Tank’ will agree to the bout being set at the welterweight limit despite being naturally much smaller. The champion is also demanding Davis return in a lesser fight beforehand.

“I can confirm Gervonta and Al [Haymon] have contacted my team. 147 or nothing. And I want him to get a tune-up fight and be at his best when we fight. He has some stuff to handle, but we for sure going to get it going on. LET’S RUMBLE.”

Garcia and Davis fought back in April 2023 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in one of the biggest events of the year. The contest was staged at a 136lb catchweight, with ‘Tank’ also insisting on a 10lb rehydration clause as part of the agreement.

After dropping Garcia with a left hand in the second round, Davis ended the fight in the seventh with a perfectly placed body shot that left his rival unable to beat the count. The defeat was the first of Garcia’s professional career, while ‘Tank’ strengthened his status as one of boxing’s biggest attractions.

‘King Ry’ has since regularly spoken about wanting the opportunity to avenge the loss, even before this latest back and forth, arguing that the weight stipulations left him drained and unable to perform.
