If you ask Michael Morales, Ian Machado Garry doesn’t stand a chance against Islam Makhachev.
Garry is set to challenge Makhachev for the UFC Welterweight Championship on Aug. 15. The 170-pound title fight is scheduled to headline UFC 330 in Philadelphia. This will be Makhachev’s first welterweight title defense, and he is a comfortable betting favorite.
Still, there are some notable names within the MMA space who feel “The Future” poses a legitimate threat to Makhachev’s title reign. Don’t count Morales as one of those names, however. The rising 170-pounder appeared on MMAJunkie‘s “Hablemos MMA” and told Danny Segura that he doesn’t see any way Garry pulls off the upset at UFC 330.
“Zero, zero, zero chance,” Morales said. “You might not believe it, but the card at the White House, I predicted every fight. I don’t see Ian with many chances. It would have to be a brutal shot that stops Makhachev. I’m 100 percent going with Makhachev. So no, no, no: Ian, definitely not.”
Morales believes he knows the game plan that Makhachev will have against Garry, but he doesn’t feel the Irishman will have an answer.
“We already know his plan. He’s done it all his life,” Morales said. “He’s going to strike and go for the takedown. He has great control on the ground. I think the fight spends the entire five rounds on the ground, or he’s going to finish. We all know how they fight.”
Morales has been emerging as a top contender at welterweight. He has even been chosen to be the backup fighter for the UFC 330 main event in case either Makhachev or Garry can’t make it at the last minute. Morales has been on a tear, amassing a perfect 19-0 record with 14 knockouts to his credit.
