The Major League Baseball trade deadline has passed, and after all the player movement, teams are now positioning themselves for the playoff push. 

The MLB trade deadline was as eventful as ever, with contenders looking to improve their rosters, highlighted by the Los Angeles Dodgers acquiring All-Star left-handed pitcher Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. 

While contending teams like the Dodgers took bold steps, trading highly ranked prospects from their farm system to try to win now, other teams not in playoff contention focused on adding prospects. 

The San Francisco Giants were among the teams that made numerous trades to acquire prospects, trading six players from their major league roster, signaling the organization’s direction for the future and leaving questions about their manager Tony Vitello.

Is Tony Vitello fit to be the future Giants manager?

The moves that the Giants made at the deadline raise the question of whether manager Tony Vitello is the right person to lead the club into its future. 

The Giants have been one of the most disappointing teams this season, 19 games below .500 at 49-68, and are in fourth place in the NL West and second-to-last in the NL, only above the Colorado Rockies.

The Vitello experiment as manager has been a failure this year due to their lack of productivity and on-field success. If the Giants are looking to win right now with older core players, then Vitello is not the right person to lead the team.

By the organization prioritizing its younger core of players, those in its farm system and on the active roster, led by Bryce Eldridge, Casey Schmitt, Jung Hoo Lee and Daniel Susac, Vitello would be an ideal fit with his knowledge and success working with younger players during his time as a collegiate manager. 

Vitello’s familiarity with the younger players coming up through the draft and his knowledge of recruiting in the college ranks during his time at Tennessee could be the perfect elixir to get the most out of their younger core. With the moves made, there is no conflict between timelines, according to Buster Posey.

Are the Giants going with two timelines?

Posey stated on his weekly appearance on the Giants' flagship radio station, KNBR, that the moves to get younger can be beneficial for the present and the future. Although Vitello has made mistakes and does not have a great team by their record, firing him after one season with no managerial experience in the MLB with a subpar team would be bad business.

Even in a tumultuous season, Vitello deserves another chance to see if he can make up for some of the mistakes he made during his first year as a major league manager. Vitello still needs to be true to himself to be successful as a major league manager.

Vitello has not been the biggest issue for the organization, and the team's poor play on the field has been driven by a lack of pitching and their top-paid veteran position players, specifically Willy Adames & Matt Chapman, not producing to the back of their baseball card.

It appears that the organization has shifted expectations and future direction with moves at the deadline, and with a slightly different expectation, Vitello should get another chance to see if he can lead a team with different expectations.
