Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayRodriguez scored a sixth-round stoppage in his 118-pound debut to become a three-division world champion
Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez became a three-division world champion on Saturday night, stopping Antonio Vargas in the sixth round to win the WBA bantamweight title in Glendale, Arizona. The victory came in Rodriguez’s first fight at 118 pounds and immediately placed him among the division’s leading names.
Rodriguez delivered a composed performance before breaking Vargas down and forcing the stoppage at Desert Diamond Arena. The victory crowned Rodriguez a three-division world champion after previous title reigns at flyweight and super flyweight.
Rodriguez relied on his trademark timing and efficient offense, repeatedly finding openings through Vargas’ guard while limiting the champion’s opportunities to build sustained attacks. The challenger also demonstrated that his power had followed him up in weight, earning Vargas’ respect with every clean connection.
The fight took a dramatic turn in the fifth round when Rodriguez scored a knockdown that left Vargas struggling to recover. Although the champion rose to his feet and continued, the momentum had swung decisively in Rodriguez’s favor.
Sensing the finish, Rodriguez pressed the action in Round 6. A well-timed combination capped by a heavy right hand forced the referee to intervene, ending the contest and confirming Rodriguez as the new WBA bantamweight champion.
The win improved Rodriguez’s record to 24-0 with 17 knockouts. It also extended an already remarkable run that has seen the San Antonio native establish himself among the sport’s elite fighters before reaching his late twenties.
Vargas, who dropped to 19-2-1, had been making the first defense of the title he retained following a draw against Daigo Higa. Despite his determination, he was unable to cope with Rodriguez’s accuracy, adaptability and overall class.
With another belt now added to his collection, Rodriguez has positioned himself for some of the biggest fights available at bantamweight. Unification bouts could soon become a realistic possibility, while an eventual move to super bantamweight remains an intriguing option for one of boxing’s most accomplished young champions.
Against Vargas, Rodriguez didn’t simply win another world title. He showed that the qualities which made him a standout in the lighter divisions remain every bit as effective against bigger opposition.
