The Mariners are placing infielder Brendan Donovan on the seven-day concussion injured list, as initially reported by Adam Jude of The Seattle Times. MLB.com’s Daniel Kramer adds that Patrick Wisdom is being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma as the corresponding move.

Donovan was set to play in yesterday’s 5-4 win over the Cubs, but he was scratched after getting hit in the head while warming up in the batting cages. Manager Dan Wilson told reporters after the game that Donovan was feeling better while adding that he “got hit pretty good.” Evidently, the concussion symptoms were severe enough for him to land on the IL. Weston Wilson figures to fill in at third base in Donovan’s absence, as he did last night.

Donovan’s first season in Seattle has unfortunately been dominated by injuries. He missed a couple weeks early in the season with a left groin muscle strain, returning on May 8th. He returned to the IL on May 17th for the same injury, this time missing two and a half months. Donovan was activated on August 4th and has since played in 14 games, putting up a slightly above average 104 wRC+ in 58 plate appearances. He has a 131 wRC+ in 159 plate appearances overall, with most of that production coming in a scorching hot April.

Donovan’s 104 wRC+ in August was still a welcome sight for the Mariners, who have lost ground in the playoff race over the last month and change. Seattle entered the second half holding the third AL Wild Card spot. They have since gone 14-19 and now sit two games behind the Rangers for the last spot, with the Guardians, Blue Jays, Twins, and Orioles standing between them.

The offense has posted a below-average 96 wRC+ in the second half, which is tied for 17th in the Majors. Randy Arozarena and Josh Naylor have been excellent since the break. Julio Rodríguez and Cal Raleigh have struggled, though the former has been better in August. Top prospect Colt Emerson, fresh off an eight-year, $95MM contract extension, has managed just a 67 wRC+ in his first taste of the big leagues, including a measly 15 wRC+ in 81 plate appearances since the break. He is currently on the IL with left wrist tendon inflammation.

Donovan’s August production and steady glove at third base were key pieces in the Mariners’ hopes to salvage a playoff spot. For now, they will try to hold the line with Wilson at third base. The 31-year-old has a 90 wRC+ in 75 big league plate appearances since arriving on a minor league deal in June. Wisdom, meanwhile, has a robust 162 wRC+ with Tacoma this year, but he’s struggled badly in limited time with the Mariners. He figures to work as an infielder off the bench, with Wilson drawing starts at third.
