However, former Australia captain Michael Clarke has singled out one particular spinner as the best all-format option in the game at present, highlighting his versatility and effectiveness despite limited opportunities.

Michael Clarke names his pick as best all-format spinner

Clarke has backed India’s Kuldeep Yadav as the best all-format spinner in world cricket at the moment, pointing towards the rarity of bowlers who are able to feature across all three formats. Speaking on the Beyond 23 Cricket Podcast, the former Australia captain explained why he rates the Indian wrist-spinner so highly.

“There are very few spinners playing all three formats. I think Kuldeep Yadav is the best all-format spinner in the world at the moment. He’s a very good short-form bowler. But he’s not getting enough opportunities. Though I think he’ll play for India against Australia,” Clarke said.

The assessment puts Kuldeep ahead of the many accomplished spinners currently operating in international cricket. Clarke’s comments also highlight an interesting aspect of the Indian bowler’s career: despite possessing the skill set to contribute in different formats, he has not always been a regular selection.

Succeeding in one format is demanding enough, but adapting to the contrasting requirements of Tests, ODIs and T20Is requires a broader skill set.
