Nottingham Forest have joined the race for a Hungary star who Liverpool and Sunderland tried to sign in January, according to reports.

Forest's summer planning is well underway, and Vitor Pereira appears to have the backing to make it a transformative window.

The club intend to offer the 57-year-old Portuguese a new long-term contract after he guided Forest to safety and a Europa League semi-final since arriving in February.

That is a significant vote of confidence from owner Evangelos Marinakis, and it gives Pereira the platform to start shaping the squad in his own image.

The potential outgoings are just as important as the incomings.

Elliot Anderson, Morgan Gibbs-White and Murillo are the main names attracting rival interest, but they're not the only ones.

Neco Williams remains the subject of interest from Aston Villa, Newcastle, Manchester United and Everton, with the BBC's Sami Mokbel revealing that all four clubs have made discreet enquiries.

Forest have opened extension talks with the 25-year-old left-back, but his future is far from settled. If Williams leaves, the club will need to reinvest wisely, and the early signs suggest they are already doing exactly that.

Pereira reportedly wants to add Wolves youngster Mateus Mane, the 18-year-old forward he handed a professional debut to at Molineux.

Burnley centre-back Maxime Esteve has also been targeted, with L'Equipe reporting that Forest have made contact over the 23-year-old Frenchman after the Clarets' relegation.

Now, another target has emerged, and this one would address a different area of the squad entirely.

Nottingham Forest target Galatasaray star Roland Sallai

According to Turkish newspaper Takvim, as cited by Sport Witness, Forest are interested in signing Galatasaray's Roland Sallai.

The 29-year-old Hungary international is a versatile operator who can play as a right-back or a right-winger, and has been a regular for the Turkish champions this season, making 47 appearances and contributing one goal and six assists across all competitions.

Galatasaray paid just £5m to sign Sallai from SC Freiburg in September 2024 and tied him to a four-year contract until 2028.

The Turkish club are reportedly willing to let him leave — but not cheaply.

Takvim report that Galatasaray are demanding £21m, a significant mark-up on what they paid less than two years ago.

This is not the first time Sallai has attracted interest from English football.

Sky Germany reported in 2024 that Leeds United held talks over signing the Hungarian during his final months at Freiburg.

That deal never materialised, and Sallai opted for Turkey instead.

Liverpool and Sunderland tried a January move earlier this season too, as relayed by Sport Witness, but none of those approaches led to a transfer either.

The complication for Forest is that Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk is understood to want to keep Sallai and has made his feelings known internally.

That creates a tension between the club — who are open to cashing in at the right price — and the manager, which could delay any deal even if Forest are willing to meet the asking price.

Sallai spent six seasons in the Bundesliga with Freiburg, making 138 league appearances and scoring 20 goals, and has earned 66 caps for Hungary with 15 international goals.

His experience across multiple leagues and positions makes him an attractive proposition for a club like Forest, who need players capable of slotting into different tactical setups as Pereira continues to refine his approach.

Whether Forest can justify spending £21m on a 29-year-old right-back when cheaper options may be available elsewhere is the question Pereira and the recruitment team will need to answer.
