Baltimore Orioles third baseman Coby Mayo has been putting up stellar numbers against southpaws this season. 

Across a minimum of 100 plate appearances, he ranks first in home runs (14), slugging percentage (.746), OPS (1.109) and OPS+ (204). His league-leading 14 home runs against them ties Matt Olson and has illustrated his enhanced raw power, as he has hit more home runs than singles (13) against left-handed pitchers.

The 24-year-old is also batting .307 with a .363 on-base percentage and an elite 205 wRC+ against them, making him an elite platoon weapon. He also boasts a 32% barrel rate and a 68% hard-hit rate. 

His most recent bomb came against St. Louis Cardinals' left-handed reliever Caleb Ferguson on Thursday, when he crushed a three-run shot in the top of the seventh inning.

While the Orioles were defeated 7-5 by the Cardinals, Mayo successfully cut St. Louis' lead and kept Baltimore in the game. His continued dominance against southpaws has made him an exciting player to watch as the Orioles continue to battle for a final AL wild-card spot, sitting three games back.

The former top prospect owns an 11.3% home run rate against lefties, which is better than Barry Bonds' home run rate of 10.9% in his 73-home-run season in 2001. Who would have ever thought that Mayo would remain in elite company and be compared to a baseball legend?

Mayo has successfully upheld a 96.1 average exit velocity against southpaws, showcasing his consistent ability to crush moonshots. He has 18 home runs this season, and at such a young age he has so much more room to develop. 

Months ago, Mayo's enhanced dominance against southpaws was already on display, but he has demonstrated that his ceiling is higher than projected. Overall, he remains a valuable asset to the Orioles, and if they successfully clinch an AL wild-card spot, Mayo could do some serious damage in the postseason.
