Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThe Kansas City Royals' acquisition of pitcher Randy Dobnak from the Seattle Mariners on June 17 was barely notable.
Dobnak had once been regarded as a potential mainstay in the back of the Twins rotation, signing a five-year, $9.25 million extension in March 2021 following a solid showing between 2019 and 2020. That extension turned into a disaster for the Twins as he struggled in 2021 and was banished to the minors, resurfacing in the majors for a combined 15 innings in 2024 and 2025.
The Royals, desperate for anything resembling competence in their injury-depleted rotation, gave Dobnak an opportunity despite a middling performance in Triple-A. That decision has proved to be brilliant thus far, as Dobnak has emerged as a dependable part of the Royals pitching staff. He has posted a 1.73 ERA and a 1.296 WHIP over his 41.2 innings, striking out 25 batters with 16 walks.
Randy Dobnak could be an option for the Royals beyond 2026
Despite his subpar strikeout and walk rates, Dobnak has found success due to his ability to keep the ball on the ground. He has an impressive 53.3 percent ground-ball rate and has allowed only two home runs. Opponents have mustered a .242/.309/.325 batting line in their 176 plate appearances as Dobnak has been able to use the Royals defense to great effect.
Dobnak's success could be an interesting storyline for the Royals over the final few weeks of the season. Noah Cameron, Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha are the only pitchers who would seemingly be guaranteed to be in the rotation in 2027. If Dobnak can continue his impressive run, he could put himself in contention for a place in the back of the Royals rotation next season.
