The Rays announced their previously-reported signing of infielder Jorge Mateo. They also recalled right-hander Jesse Scholtens. To open active roster spots for those two, infielder Carson Williams and right-hander Michael Grove have been optioned to Triple-A Durham. To open a 40-man spot for Mateo, righty Trevor Martin has been designated for assignment.

Martin, 25, was added to Tampa’s 40-man roster in April. He has been shuttled between the majors and Triple-A this year. In the big leagues, he has thrown 11 1/3 innings over six appearances, allowing five earned runs. For Durham, he has thrown 43 2/3 innings with a 3.09 earned run average. His 11.2% walk rate is fairly high but he has punched out 25% of batters faced and induced grounders on 46.6% of balls in play.

In June, FanGraphs ranked Martin the #40 prospect in the Rays’ system. That report highlights his mid-90s fastball, noting that it plays up because of his extension and arm angle. His cutter and splitter are his primary secondary pitches.

With the trade deadline now in the past, the Rays will have to place Martin on waivers. Based on his numbers, stuff and full slate of options, it would be a surprise if he weren’t claimed. But if he does manage to pass through, he would stick with the Rays as non-roster depth. He does not have a previous career outright nor does he have three years of service time, so he wouldn’t have the right to elect free agency.
