The Boston Red Sox are a mess, but CEO Sam Kennedy isn't planning to make front-office changes...yet.

Entering Thursday, the Red Sox were 27-39 and last in the American League East, trailing the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays (40-25) by 13.5 games. Kennedy ripped the team for the horrendous season during an interview with WEEI-FM in Boston but said firing embattled baseball chief baseball officer Craig Breslow "isn't even on the table."

Sam Kennedy discusses Craig Breslow's job security while ripping team

"I think it's important here from the outset to acknowledge how embarrassing, unacceptable, maddening, frustrating — whatever words you want to use — the past two and a half months have been," Kennedy said. "There's no way to sugarcoat it. It's been awful, especially when you consider the stated goal of building upon what happened last season."

Last season, the Red Sox went 89-73 and made the AL Wild Card, losing to the New York Yankees in three games. Now, they should consider this season a success if they don't finish last in the division, let alone make the postseason. As of Thursday, FanGraphs Baseball gives them a mere 12.4 percent chance to make the playoffs, the worst in the AL East.

Kennedy said Breslow is "working as hard as anyone to get things back on track." The moves he's made to do that have pushed the team even further off track.

After a 10-17 start, Breslow fired manager Alex Cora and replaced him with interim Chad Tracy, which upset many in the clubhouse. Those who disagreed with the move may be even angrier after going 17-22 in their first 39 games without the one-time World Series champion.

Kennedy can defend Breslow all he wants, but at a certain point, he may have to change his stance. Since joining Boston in 2023, Breslow has failed to prove he can build a championship contender, making just one playoff trip during his tenure. With the way this season is unfolding thus far, count on Boston missing the postseason for the third time in four years.
