Great hood design
The hood on the Rab Microlite is one of the jacket’s most useful features for serious outdoor use. It includes a stiffened peak and high neck that help shield the face from wind and precipitation, while interior toggles let the wearer adjust the hood size around the face. There’s a zipper garage at the top and soft microfiber fabric for added face and chin comfort. This level of functionality in a down jacket hood at this price point is unheard of, and you’ll appreciate it if you’re belaying your partner or hiking up an exposed ridge in blowing snow.
If you’ve been frustrated by the lack of hood adjustability on similar down jackets or by oversized hoods that assume you’re wearing a climbing or ski helmet, the Rab Microlite hood is the antidote. It is designed to fit under a hood and is optimized for users like hikers who aren’t wearing one.
The drawcords that adjust the face opening are inside the hood to keep them from tangling with your ropes or gear.Warmth and performance
The 30D Pertex Quantum shell is wind-resistant and treated with a durable water repellent finish. It’s not as thin or lightweight as the 7D shell fabrics used on ultralight down jackets on purpose, but it’s designed for increased tear resistance and durability for everyday use as well as outdoor pursuits. It handles light showers, mist, and brief exposure to damp conditions, but it isn’t waterproof. The jacket’s sewn-through baffles keep it slim and flexible, but they don’t provide as much loft or heat retention as the box-wall construction in heavier or more expensive down jackets.
The 700-fill power hydrophobic down balances warmth, compressibility, and durability. The jacket is not designed as an expedition-weight parka, but it offers enough insulation for cool-weather camping, hiking, and general mountain use. While you can buy lighter jackets with higher fill-power down, they often sacrifice hood performance.
Weight and packability
At 422 g (15.6 oz) in men’s size large, the Microlight Alpine is light enough for backpacking and climbing without being among the lightest down jackets available. Its compact baffle design and lightweight outer fabric compress easily into a backpack, making it a dependable emergency layer or camp jacket.
Recycled materials and sustainability
The Microlight Alpine uses recycled materials for its main components, including the outer fabric, lining, and down insulation. Rab’s recycled down is recovered from post-consumer duvets and garments that would otherwise be discarded. The down also receives a hydrophobic treatment intended to reduce moisture absorption and help it retain warmth in damp conditions.
Fit and sizing
The Microlight Alpine has a roomy cut, articulated sleeves, and slightly longer arms to support reaching and climbing movements. Its longer hem extends below the belt line, helping prevent the jacket from riding up beneath a climbing harness. The usual size should work well over a base layer or light fleece, while sizing up may be preferable if you plan to wear a thick midlayer underneath.
The longer torso length prevents riding up under a climbing harness.Recommendation
The Rab Microlight Alpine Down Jacket is a well-balanced down jacket for active outdoor use. It combines moderate weight, useful three-season warmth, a functional helmet-compatible hood, and recycled materials in a durable package. It is particularly suitable for hiking, backpacking, climbing, ski touring, travel, and everyday winter layering. For users who want one versatile down jacket for a wide range of mountain and outdoor activities, the Microlight Alpine remains a strong choice.
Difference Between This Model and Newest Release
Rab just introduced a new version of this jacket (late 2026) that is identical to the old one, except for the materials used. The old jacket used 100% recycled down treated with Nikwax water resistance, while the new version uses a treatment from Granger. Similarly, the old version used a 100% recycled 30D Pertex Quantum shell, while the new version uses a slightly different 100% recycled 30D Pertex Quantum made from recycled fishing nets. Otherwise, the functionality is identical.
