A faint purling of waves against the hull had eased us all into sleep, until I realised that another sound was nudging into my dreams. Swelling choral music echoed through the dark. Wrapped in a blanket against the April night chill, I crept out on deck of our charter yacht to discover the shoreline tinted red and gold as fireworks backlit the many churches of the surrounding towns.

The music was the Paschal Troparion, or Christos Anesti, sung at midnight on Greek Orthodox Holy Saturday. Each church broadcast their service via speakers to create a soaring musical round which rang across the natural amphitheatre of the bay, building to a cacophony of ringing bells and crackling gunpowder.

Amid it all, ours was one of just a handful of anchor lights bobbing off Parikia. This was Greece before the tourist crowds turn up.

Choosing an early season charter

When we spotted an opportunity to take an early season charter with Sunsail out of Athens it seemed like a rare chance for our family to enjoy some slower paced sailing. With two teenagers competing nearly every weekend in youth racing, and summer exams looming, our calendars were rammed.

When we found some early availability in April, we decided to chance it – sure, the weather could be a gamble. But we reasoned the teens were used to dinghy training through winter so the Mediterranean in spring should seem positively balmy.

Our charter began from Sunsail’s Athens base. Flying into the Greek capital city gave more options out of season than some of the island routes, and the transfer from Athens airport is usually only 30-40 minutes (we arrived in the evening just as Athenians were leaving the city for Greek Easter, so things took a little longer).

The Sunsail base is at Zea Marina, in Piraeus, a full service D-Marin marina with an outer basin crammed with mega yachts. The Sunsail fleet sits stern-to on a seawall, avoiding the trickier berths of the inner basin.

Enjoying flat water sailing between the islands.
Space for holiday living

Stepping aboard our very new Sunsail 46 the first thing that struck us all was the sheer volume of living space. The saloon is on a par with some multihulls, and there were no fewer than four double cabins, with four ensuite heads/showers. (Did I mention we were sailing with teenagers? Big tick.).

Sunsail now sends mandatory video briefings to all charter guests before departure, so I thought I knew what to expect of our home for the week. But as we nosed around the aptly named Athena, I found more and more beyond expectation: an electric outboard, electric winches, generator and air-con, a pre-inflated paddleboard, Fusion bluetooth stereo system, and high-spec chartplotters. Plus there was the best equipped galley I’ve ever seen on a charter yacht, with full-size undercounter fridge, separate deep freezer, microwave/combi oven, and enough worktop space to prepare a feast.

On top of the pre-departure videos, Sunsail base staff also gave us a thorough boat briefing tour, and chatted through our routing options, sharing favourite spots and local weather sources.

Being right in the city made provisioning straightforward (though you can also prebook a delivery to the yacht). After a quick walk to the nearest supermarket, and a round of fiercely brewed coffees and morning pastries oozing cheese, honey and pistachio from one of the many nearby bakeries, it was time to drop the lines.

Of sea and storms

A 15-18 knot westerly greeted us as we nosed out into the Bay of Piraeus, and we swiftly hoisted sails onto a broad reach towards the point of Sounion, on the south-eastern tip of the Greek mainland.

Athens is busy with both commercial shipping and fast ferries, so if heading south-west to the Saronic Islands – a popular route from the Athens base – you’ll need your wits about you as you’re immediately crossing shipping lanes. Instead, we followed a quieter coastline route, spotting only occasional sailing yachts or local fishermen.

Incredible sunsets over the anchorage off Sounion. Photo: Helen Fretter

The wind eased and backed as we slunk through the cut between the island of Patroklos and the southern tip of the mainland, the still waters dotted with fish farms, until the impressive temple of Poseidon loomed high on the horizon. While the Parthenon may be Greece’s most famous landmark, for sailors a temple devoted to the god of sea and storms was a must-visit.

After taking advice from the excellent onboard pilot book, we dropped anchor off the north shore, popped our tender in the water (electric winches made simple work of launching it from the foredeck) then headed ashore.

Our reward for a meandering hike to the top was truly spectacular views, as visitors gathered on the wildflower-dotted hillside to enjoy the sunset from what must be one of the best vantage points in Greece.

After a deceptively rolly night at an otherwise quiet anchorage, we continued following the Western Cyclades island chain with a building breeze from the north-east pushing us along. This had the most traffic we saw all week, so was an opportunity to dig out a hand-bearing compass and give the dinghy sailors on board a lesson in rules of the road while passing bulk carriers and fast ferries.

The stunning Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion at sunset.
Cruising the Western Cyclades

The beachside village of Kounduros on the first island of Kea had looked promising for a lunch stop, but as we circled the bay it seemed nothing had yet opened for the season. So instead we carried on to Kythnos, picnicking in the cockpit as we went.

Almost immediately, the breeze rapidly built to 22+ knots, white caps streaking the waters as it funnelled between islands. Though perhaps a little early in the season for a full Meltemi, it was a sharp reminder of how quickly conditions can switch.

Predictably, there was a little inter-family competition as to who could put the biggest number on Athena‘s speedo, and just what our beamy 46-footer was capable of in a strong blow. The full length hull chines turned out to be more than cosmetic styling, the yacht sitting easily on a fast reach with no hint of loss of grip from the twin rudders. After clocking over 9 knots we decided to err on the side of caution rather than push for double figures, and popped a reef in, though it didn’t discernibly slow us down.

The town of Merichas on Kythnos would be our next overnight stop, but we didn’t fancy attempting our first family stern-to mooring while being pushed onto the seawall by a strong westerly. Instead, we ducked into Fykiada while waiting for conditions to ease.

Fykiada is a stunning cove divided by a sand isthmus, which creates a perfect double-sided beach known as Kolona. We joined a 60ft performance cruiser sheltering on the eastern side of the sand bar, which in calmer conditions would make an idyllic swim and snorkelling spot.

The double-sided sandspit at Kolona Fykiada. Photo: Getty Images/iStockphoto

By late afternoon the winds had moderated as forecast, so we lifted the hook and headed for Merichas. After picking a spot as far from the ferry as possible, tying up thankfully proved stress-free thanks to our bow thruster, and harbour staff helpfully catching visitors’ lines.

Though the pilot book suggested that services were basic, the harbour has clearly had recent investment, yet our overnight berthing fee came to less than €10. Merichas was a perfect introduction to Greek island life, with languid cats prowling the fishing docks as the day’s catch was brought ashore, and seafood restaurants lining the beach.

Mini Mykonos

In lighter winds the following day we slowly continued south, rounding the island of Serifos. We claimed a deserted deep inlet at Malliadiko Beach as our own for the afternoon, launching the paddleboard to explore the cave-lined shore, and briefly snorkelling in its stunning turquoise – though admittedly rather refreshing – waters.

The Sunsail 46 was spacious and comfortable, but fun to sail in a breeze. Photo: Sunsail

Then on to Sifnos, motor-sailing past its cedar-lined hillsides and chapel-topped cliffs. Sifnos is sometimes referred to as a ‘mini Mykonos’, and Platis Gialos is a stylish mix of boutique hotels and eateries with echoes of the Instagram-famous honeypot. But when we visited it was in a sleepy pre-season mood, the harbour near-deserted, most restaurants yet to open. Instead we ate on bean bags at a beach bar full of locals enjoying the balmy quiet before summer began.

The next morning we crept out of port as cockerels were crowing on shore, the lightest of breezes pushing us west to Paros.

The entrance to the main port of Parikia requires focus, with high, jagged rocks littering the approach and the pilot book telling tales of wrecks through the ages, while fast ferries zoom past. After the tranquility of Sifnos, Parikia harbour felt hot, noisy and busy, so we picked up a mooring buoy off the beach.

Returning by tender to Parikia town proved a treat, however. We wandered jumbled stone lanes weaving past whitewashed buildings, with galleries, gelato and bakeries at every turn, before squeezing into a packed taverna serving sea bass and lamb stew. Clergymen and celebrants hurried past carrying white and red floral arrangements, and incense wafted from open churches on every corner, preparing for the midnight service that would later thunder across the bay.

Wandering whitewashed alleys with colorful flowers at Parikia on the island of Paros.
Greek Easter

By this point in the week we had to concede that, no matter how long we waited, the cracking westerlies of earlier in the week were not about to return and we had a long motor north ahead of us. So we again slipped out shortly after sunrise, and began making miles back towards Athens, passing Siros and Gyaros on our way to Kea.

The wind was vanishingly light, but the sea calm, and the traffic near non-existent, so we each took advantage of the downtime to read, nap, or sunbathe on the foredeck.

The wind began to fill as we approached Kea, and we eased into Spathi, a deep, almost rectangular bay that looked idyllic. But, just as we prepared to anchor, the new breeze swirled and spun unpredictably. Mildly frustrated, we pulled up the anchor and rehoisted sails to head around the top of the island to Vourkari instead.

This turned out to be one of the our best sails of the week, our teenagers relishing the chance to handle a 46-footer like a dinghy, short-tacking on the shifts into Vourkari bay before gliding onto a mooring buoy under sail.

Tied up just off the beach in 4m of water, we realised we’d also serendipitously found our favourite spot of the whole trip. A wedding celebration was in full flow at a nearby house, dancers spilling out onto the lawn, and the shallow water so clear we could see every blade of seagrass beneath our bow.

Sailing on and off the mooring ball in Vourkari was a fun exercise in boat handling for the teenagers on board. Photo: Helen Fretter

After a pre-dinner swim, fireworks began fizzing over Athena. Vourkari’s Easter Sunday celebrations began before sundown, and once again we were right in the middle of it.

As we dinghied ashore, locals set fire to a small wooden boat with an effigy on board, pink and orange smoke from flares drifting across the water.

The harbourside restaurant owner greeted us with a big smile, pulling his sister over to translate as he explained “It’s Easter! We’ve spit roasted a lamb. You eat lamb with us?” So we ate smoky lamb and garlicky greens harvested from the island’s soil, and felt very much as if we had been welcomed into a village.

There is something special about visiting a place when it still belongs to the locals. But that doesn’t only come from sailing far from the beaten path. It can be all in the timing. We took an early charter because it was the only time we could, and it turned out to be one of the best times of all.

The Athens sailing area is one of Sunsail’s ‘Level 3’ destination, requiring the most experience.
Chartering in Greece: what you need to know

■ Sunsail class their Athens sailing area as ‘Level 3’, or requiring the most experience. Meltemi winds can fill in within minutes, so you need to familiarise yourself with the boat’s reefing system well before you need it. Other areas of Greece, including Lefkas and Corfu are ‘Level 1’, so more suitable for less inexperienced or less confident sailors.

■ To charter in Greece requires an ICC or equivalent. We had RYA and ASA qualifications above the required minimum, but they were issued some years ago… Allow time to find your certificates as you’ll need the originals. If you haven’t got the paperwork but do have the experience, there is the option to take a single-day ICC course with Sunsail in Portsmouth before you go.

■ The supplied pilot book (Greek Waters Pilot by Lucinda and Rod Heikell) was excellent, but a brief search online for updates proved helpful at times. We found very good mobile reception across the islands.

■ We were impressed with the efficiency and thoroughness of the Sunsail base staff, who were keen to share local knowledge and seemed almost disappointed we didn’t have any jobs to add to their maintenance list when we returned!

■ Modern charter yachts have come of age. We loved having an electric outboard you could pick up one-handed. Electric winches made launching/recovering the tender onto the foredeck simple, and vastly preferable to towing it. Powered winches also proved useful when we set a stern anchor one night to reduce rolling, and recovered it by attaching a halyard. Tankage was impressive – we never got close to needing a freshwater or fuel top up.

How to get there

“I think Bam is good enough to go out there and possibly beat Inoue, but one more fight would be the ideal thing for me as a trainer,” said Robert Garcia to Fight Hub TV, following Bam’s sixth-round TKO win over Antonio Vargas last night.

“It’s not like we’re changing the date. We’re not asking, you know, for six months later. The date doesn’t change. I’m just asking for another fight against a solid 118-pounder sometime in September.”

Robert looks like he’s overprotecting his fighter here, and the frustration from fans on X makes a lot of sense. When a trainer starts mapping out “one more acclimation fight” in a division the boxer has already conquered, it screams hesitation. Robert knows the immense risks that come with moving up to face a lethal puncher like Inoue, and this cautious approach makes him look like he’s trying to delay the inevitable.

The real issue is that Bam is letting his camp dictate the pace instead of demanding the biggest fight available. In boxing, timing is everything. Waiting around for the perfect moment is a massive gamble because the landscape changes instantly.

Look at what just happened last month at the Tokyo Dome. Inoue took Nakatani’s absolute best shots, weathered a late surge, and still walked away with a unanimous decision win. If a rematch happens and Nakatani manages to turn the tables, or if Inoue simply decides he has nothing left to prove after cleaning out his biggest threats, the window closes. Inoue is sitting on an absolute fortune, treated like royalty in Japan, and has zero financial reason to stick around if the motivation fades.

By playing it safe and staying at bantamweight, Team Rodriguez risks missing the boat entirely. If Bam wants to cement his legacy and secure the biggest payday of his career, he needs to take the reins, bypass the tune-ups, and force the move to 122 immediately before the opportunity vanishes.

Bam just won a world title there. Beating another fighter from a weak division proves very little.

If Rodriguez dominates, fans will say he did exactly what he was supposed to do against another smaller opponent. If he struggles, what happens then? Does Team Rodriguez ask for another fight at 122 before Inoue? That’s the concern many fans have. At some point, “one more fight” stops sounding like preparation and starts sounding like a delay tactic.

Rodriguez is not an untested prospect. He’s a three-division world champion who has been a professional for nearly a decade. Garcia himself stated that he believes Bam is capable of beating Inoue. If that’s the case, then why are they acting as though Rodriguez still needs protecting?

If Rodriguez genuinely requires a transition fight, there are better options available at super bantamweight. Junto Nakatani, Sam Goodman, Murodjon Akhmadaliev, and Ramon Cardenas would all provide a more meaningful test than another assignment at 118 pounds. Those fights would offer insight into how Bam handles the size and physicality he’ll encounter against Inoue.

Instead, Robert’s proposal has created the perception that Team Bam lacks confidence in moving forward with boxing’s biggest lower-weight showdown.

Fans have heard versions of this story before. One tune-up turns into two. One adjustment fight becomes another request for patience. The biggest fights in boxing have a habit of always being just one fight away.

If Bam Rodriguez wants to fight Inoue, then fight Inoue. If he truly needs another bout first, move to 122 immediately and face someone who actually prepares him for the challenge ahead.

But another trip through a thin bantamweight division accomplishes nothing. It wastes time, raises new doubts, and leaves fans wondering whether Team Rodriguez is trying to build confidence or avoid risk.

For a fighter as accomplished as Rodriguez, those questions shouldn’t even exist.

The clock may be ticking on one of boxing’s most intriguing matchups. Dmitry Bivol and David Benavidez are widely regarded as two of the sport’s elite fighters, but questions are beginning to emerge about whether Benavidez can continue making the 175-pound light heavyweight limit long enough for the fight to happen.

Ben Whittaker recently suggested that Benavidez’s growing frame could complicate matters if the bout isn’t made soon.

“It’s a great fight for the division,” Whittaker said. “I don’t know if it will happen because Benavidez looks big, man. He might be fighting for the WBC at cruiserweight. If he’s sitting around that weight for a while, it will be hard to come down, but it’s a fight that a lot of people want to see,” said Whittaker to Ring.

“They’ve sparred. They’ve got history, and they’re fighters that are not scared to fight. It’s all just politics or weight, this and that, but if it does happen, it’ll be great to see.”

The comments touch on a concern that many fans have shared since Benavidez’s recent move up in weight. The 29-year-old looked significantly drained during his final appearances at light heavyweight, and his dominant sixth-round stoppage victory over Gilberto Ramirez to capture cruiserweight titles only fueled speculation that his future could lie above 175 pounds.

Benavidez currently holds the WBC light heavyweight title along with the WBA and WBO cruiserweight belts. The WBC has also ordered him to face cruiserweight champion Noel Mikaelian, creating another obstacle for those hoping to see him return to light heavyweight in the near future.

Bivol remains in position for a third fight with Artur Beterbiev after splitting two closely contested bouts with his longtime rival. The Russian returned from a 15-month absence on May 30 and successfully defended his Ring, WBA, IBF and WBO light heavyweight titles with a one-sided decision victory over Michael Eifert.

On paper, Bivol versus Benavidez remains one of the strongest fights that boxing can offer. But with Benavidez increasingly establishing himself as a force at cruiserweight, the opportunity to make the matchup at 175 pounds may not remain open indefinitely.

“We’re waiting for you,” Tyson said in a clip on Instagram, addressing Usyk while referring to Kabayel’s long-awaited title opportunity.

The message arrives as questions continue to surround Usyk’s next move following his controversial 11th-round stoppage victory over Rico Verhoeven last month. The Ukrainian retained his WBC, WBA, and IBF heavyweight titles in a fight that sparked debate after referee Mark Lyson halted the contest shortly after Verhoeven had beaten the count from a knockdown.

While some fans have called for an immediate rematch with Verhoeven, the WBC has already ordered Usyk to defend his title against Kabayel.

The unbeaten German has been waiting for his shot since earning interim champion status. Kabayel secured that position by stopping Zhilei Zhang with a sustained body attack in the sixth round of their February 2025 bout, strengthening his case as one of the heavyweight division’s most deserving contenders.

At 33, Kabayel has repeatedly stated his desire to challenge for a world title after climbing the rankings through victories over highly regarded opposition. Tyson’s endorsement now adds another prominent name to those advocating for the mandatory challenger to finally receive his opportunity.

Usyk has not publicly confirmed his next opponent. However, with the WBC order in place and Kabayel continuing to press his claim, pressure is mounting on the unified champion to provide clarity about the future of the heavyweight division.

For Kabayel, the message remains simple.

“We’re waiting for you.”

“That dude hit hard,” Broner said while discussing Maidana. “My whole body went numb. I grabbed him and said, ‘Boy, you’re gonna have to kill me tonight.'”

The comments brought fans back to December 14, 2013, when Maidana handed Broner the first defeat of his career by unanimous decision in San Antonio, Texas. Broner was dropped twice and lost his WBA welterweight title in what many viewed as a stunning upset at the time.

However, the Maidana fight may not have been the beginning of Broner’s decline as much as it was the moment everything finally caught up to him.

Broner entered the bout with a 27-0 record and world titles in three weight classes. Yet there had already been warning signs. His victory over Daniel Ponce de León in 2011 remains one of the more debated decisions of that era, with many fans believing Ponce de León deserved the win. Two years later, Broner edged Paulie Malignaggi by split decision to capture the WBA welterweight title in another fight that divided opinion.

Maidana was simply the first fighter to remove all doubt.

At the same time, Broner’s success outside the ring had accelerated rapidly. By his mid-20s, he had become one of boxing’s biggest personalities, earning significant purses and enjoying the celebrity lifestyle that accompanied his rise. Mansions, expensive cars and frequent partying became part of the public image he embraced.

The talent never completely disappeared. Broner defeated John Molina Jr., won another world title by stopping Khabib Allakhverdiev, and remained a recognizable attraction. But the consistency and discipline that separate very good fighters from great ones often appeared to be missing.

Following the Maidana defeat, Broner went 8-5-1 over the remainder of his career, suffering losses to Shawn Porter, Mikey Garcia, Manny Pacquiao and Blair Cobbs, while battling Jessie Vargas to a draw.

That’s why Maidana’s victory remains such a significant moment in Broner’s story.

The Argentine didn’t destroy Broner’s career overnight. Broner still had meaningful moments after that December night in Texas.

But Maidana exposed flaws that had surfaced before and forced Broner to confront them. The adjustments never fully came.

More than a decade later, Broner’s recollection of the punishment he endured serves as a reminder of the night boxing stopped asking whether he was the next Floyd Mayweather and started asking what might have been.

Joshua has repeatedly maintained that he is prepared to face any opponent.

“For me, I want it all. I will fight everyone, and that’s why I still do it. I’ve got so much improvement to do,” said Joshua to Ring Magazine. “This is my true identity as a fighter. I’ve got the love for it, the passion. It’s tough, don’t get me wrong. I fought Dubois, and I got knocked out, and I’m still standing strong here, and I gave a good account of myself, and I’m going to go out there and give my best again.”

Joshua then specifically mentioned Fabio Wardley when discussing potential future opponents.

“I’ll fight Fabio, I’ll fight all of them, ’cause it’s what we do. There’s none of this ‘oh I don’t want to fight him, I don’t want to fight that person.’ That’s not where my head’s at. My head is in a totally different space from anyone who says ‘Oh, I don’t want to’. Give me work.”

Joshua’s comments come at a time when uncertainty continues to surround a long-discussed showdown with Tyson Fury. Promoter Eddie Hearn has maintained that the all-British heavyweight clash remains a target, but alternative options could come into play if negotiations fail to materialize.

Wardley has established himself as one of Britain’s fastest-rising heavyweights through his aggressive style and knockout power. A domestic showdown with Joshua would carry significant commercial appeal in the UK and represent another major step up for the unbeaten contender.

Before any discussions about Wardley or Fury can progress, Joshua must first deal with Prenga on July 25 in Jeddah. The bout will be Joshua’s first appearance since his knockout loss to Daniel Dubois, with the former unified champion seeking to rebuild momentum heading into what could be the final major chapter of his career.

Joshua has repeatedly insisted that he is not interested in avoiding dangerous opponents. His latest comments suggest that philosophy remains intact, with Wardley becoming the latest heavyweight name Joshua says he would willingly face.

Adrien Broner competed over 40 times in his professional career but the power from one fighter in particular stands out clear in his mind.

Broner was widely regarded as one of the stars of the sport after becoming a three-weight world champion at just 23, and a four-weight world champion at 26, with Oscar De La Hoya the only man to have achieved that second feat at an earlier age.

At one stage Broner had an unbeaten record of 27-0, but a criticism that he has faced throughout his career is his lack of commitment and discipline, with several losses meaning that record now stands at 35 wins from 42 fights.

The first of those defeats came to Marcos Maidana in December 2013, with Broner losing his WBA welterweight title in a unanimous decision defeat.

Broner was a big favourite heading into the bout, but was dropped twice throughout the contest, and over a decade on that fight still has a lasting impact on the American after revealing on a live stream that he was hit so hard that ‘his whole body went numb.’

Maidana held the WBA Regular super-lightweight title along with the WBA welterweight belt, and his power was evident throughout his career, with 31 victories coming by knockout.

His win over Broner famously led to two fights with Floyd Mayweather, with the first ending in a majority decision loss for the Argentinian, before a more comfortable unanimous decision win for Mayweather in the rematch.

That second meeting proved to be the final time that Maidana was in action, retiring with a final record of 35 wins and 5 defeats.

Jalen Brunson Says Leaving $113M On The Table Was '100% Worth It'

In an interview with Malika Andrews in the wake of winning the 2026 NBA championship, Jalen Brunson touched on a handful of topics. One thing came through during their conversation: Brunson has no regrets with any of the sacrifices he made to lead the New York Knicks to the title.

When asked if leaving $113 million on the table when he extended his deal with New York was worth it, Brunson didn't hesitate in answering.

"100% worth it. 100% worth it," Brunson said. "Even if we didn't achieve this, I feel like being able to do that and grind and go on a journey to try and achieve it, it would have been worth it as well, but this is definitely the turn on top."

Brunson left money on the table to help the Knicks build on their roster around him. That has helped New York keep Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns in the fold. It could also help the Knicks when they attempt to re-sign Mitchell Robinson and Landry Shamet this offseason.

As for his plans now, Brunson said he's going to celebrate before getting ready to defend his newly won championship. When asked when he'll be hungry for another title, the 2026 NBA Finals MVP said it won't take long.

"After the parade. Yeah, I think I've done a decent job of being able to not look ahead, not look past anything, staying in the moment," Brunson said. "I'm going to try and enjoy this for a little bit and then once it's time to get back to work, it's back to work."

Recent reports have surfaced that the Brooklyn Nets, one of the teams expected to have cap space this offseason, are likely to make a run at Reaves. Despite the fact that Reaves is unrestricted and the Lakers can't officially match offers, Reaves' camp is likely to give Los Angeles a chance to match or beat any offers he receives.

Should the Lakers reach an agreement with Reaves on a new contract, they'll delay signing him to complete their other offseason moves. If Los Angeles goes the cap space route, they could create nearly $50 million in space. They'd use that cap room first, while retaining Reaves' cap hold and Bird rights, then re-sign the combo guard to his new deal.

Braun is just starting the five-year, $125 million extension he inked last offseason. The Nuggets will pay Braun $21.5 million for the 2026-27 season.

With everyone in the fold, Denver is roughly $8 million over the second apron. The Nuggets are expected to get off some salary by waiving or trading Jonas Valanciunas, as well as other smaller salary-shedding moves this offseason. In order to create enough wiggle room to re-sign Watson and fill out their roster without going deep into the tax, Denver is expected to explore trading Braun or last season's acquisition, Cameron Johnson.

The NBA is the highest level of basketball and for many young players in Europe it is the main goal. The EuroLeague and domestic leagues are strong and competitive, but the NBA receives more attention and has higher physical demands. In recent years, more young players are beginning to get noticed by scouts in Europe, as well as the US.

At the same time, basketball has become way more popular in betting, so people now keep up with games in different ways, not just by watching them. They also look at stats and use different online platforms to follow what’s going on. This is also where some fans come across promotional offers like TippmixPro Bonus Code 2026 during busy basketball periods when interest in European and NBA games is high. In this context, platforms like MightyTips also appear, offering betting-related content from an international team of experts, including daily football predictions, bookmaker reviews, and regularly updated guides and bonus information for users who follow sports betting more closely.

Maurizio Gherardini has been an Italian basketball executive for decades. In an interview with Eurohoops, he said:
“EuroLeague is a league that forms talented players for the next step.”

Among the most talked-about names are:

Tarik Biberovic

Nadir Hifi

Miikka Muurinen

Juan Nunez

Tarik Biberovic

Tarik Biberovic has been followed in Europe for a while, but because of his recent step forward, they talk more seriously about him in the NBA. He’s gained more trust at Fenerbahce within a system that emphasizes discipline and doing the simple stuff well, and has developed into a wing who can shoot, defend across multiple positions and fill a defined role. His shooting, particularly from three, is what makes him effective in today’s game.

Nadir Hifi

Photo by Markus Spiske on Unsplash

Nadir Hifi is a different type of EuroLeague prospect. He has more freedom and instinct in his game than players such as Biberovic. He’s already known in France as a scorer who can take over games for stretches, and capable of scoring from anywhere on the floor. The main concerns about him are his size, defense and decision making. At NBA level guards like him usually need to be either very efficient or strong playmakers.

Miikka Muurinen

Miikka Muurinen is the youngest player in the list and more of a long-term NBA candidate. He already has good size for his age and moves comfortably, which makes him an interesting prospect when you think about the future. He can handle the ball a bit in transition and looks like a player who could develop in different directions depending on how his body and game evolve.

An interesting fact about Miikka Muurinen:

He is already drawing attention as one of Finland’s most promising young prospects, with scouts especially liking how well he moves for his size at such an early stage of his career.

Juan Nunez

Photo by LOGAN WEAVER | @LGNWVR on Unsplash

Juan Nunez is at his best when he’s running the offense. He’s comfortable in pick-and-roll situations, doesn’t rush plays, and keeps things under control, which makes him a very good option for any team, especially as a backup point guard. At higher levels, his value comes more from how he runs the team than from scoring. He keeps the offense organized, gets teammates into good spots, and is able to avoid unnecessary mistakes. Still, defenses will give him space at times, and he has to be able to make them pay for that.

An NBA Big Board scout said in an interview that you can’t judge young European players by stats alone, context matters just as much:

“Many young players get limited playing time or play in leagues where the competition is low.”

Conclusion

These players are still at very different stages, and their NBA chances don’t look the same. Some already look like they could find a role sooner, while others are still a long way from that level and need time to develop. What’s clear is that all of them are now being talked about in the NBA, not just as European players.

Topuria (17-0 MMA) will be returning to action for the first time since violently knocking out Charles Oliveira in the first-round of their title fight at UFC 317 in June of last year. Prior to that triumph, ‘El Matador’ was coming off back-to-back knockout wins over Max Holloway and Alex Volkanovski respectively.

Meanwhile, Justin Gaethje (27-5 MMA) was most previously seen in action this past January at UFC 324, where he scored a unanimous decision win over Paddy Pimblett to claim the promotion‘s interim lightweight title. Prior to that victory, ‘The Highlight’ was coming off a decision win over Rafael Fiziev.

UFC Freedom 250 is co-headlined by an interim heavyweight title fight between Ciryl Gane and Alex Pereira.

Gane (13-2 MMA) will be competing for the first time since his no-contest with reigning heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall last October at UFC 321. Prior to that controversial bout, the Frenchman had earned victories over Alexander Volkov and Serghei Spivac.

Meanwhile, Alex Pereira (13-3 MMA) most previously competed at UFC 320, where he scored a first-round TKO victory over Magomed Ankalaev to reclaim the promotion‘s light heavyweight title. ‘Poatan’ has gone 4-1 over his past five fights overall.

Also featured on this evening’s fight card is a highly anticipated bantamweight bout between Sean O’Malley and Aiemann Zahabi.

O’Malley (19-3 MMA) most recently competed this past January at UFC 324, where he scored a unanimous decision win over Song Yadong. Prior to that triumph, ‘Suga’ was coming off back-to-back losses against fellow former bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvilli.

Meanwhile, Aiemann Zahabi (14-2 MMA) will enter tonight’s contest on a seven-fight winning streak, with his most recent Octagon victory being a split decision win over Marlon Vera this past October.

Also featured on tonight’s UFC Freedom 250 fight card is a heavyweight bout featuring Derrick Lewis taking on Josh Hokit.

Lewis (29-13 MMA) will enter the contest looking to rebound this after suffering a second-round TKO loss to Waldo Cortes-Acosta this past January at UFC 324. Prior to that defeat, ‘The Black Beast’ was coming off a first-round TKO victory over Tallison Teixeira.

Meanwhile, Josh Hokit (9-0 MMA) will be returning to the Octagon for the first time since his thrilling war with Curtis Blaydes this past April in Miami. The brash American won that contest via unanimous decision. Prior to that triumph, Hokit was coming off back-to-back first-round TKO victories over Max Gimenis and Denzel Freeman.

If that wasn’t enough to get you interested, UFC Freedom 250 also features a lightweight contest between Mauricio Ruffy and Michael Chandler.

Ruffy (13-2 MMA) was most previously seen in action this past February at UFC 325, where he scored a second-round TKO victory over Rafael Fiziev. Prior to that triumph, ‘One Shot’ had suffered a submission defeat to Benoit Saint Denis.

Meanwhile, Michael Chandler (23-10 MMA) will enter tonight’s contest looking to snap a three-fight losing skid. ‘Iron’ is coming off defeats to Paddy Pimblett, Charles Oliveira and Dustin Poirier respectively. Prior to that rough stretch, Chandler was coming off a knockout win over Tony Ferguson in May of 2022.

Salah Hamli is the combatant in question, and the PFL MENA champion from 2025 trains out of the same gym that Ilia Topuria does. When asked for his thoughts on the UFC White House clash with interim champ Justin Gaethje vying for Topuria’s lightweight title on June 14th, Hamli said [via Bowks Talking Bouts],

“Yeah. When I enter my gym, my first famous person I see, my first UFC fighter I see in-person is Ilia Topuria. He only have one fight when I enter the gym to start training and it’s like wow, I see him grow up. He right now fight in the white house with a legend like Justin Gaethje. I think Ilia is [on] another level. I think he finishes him in the first round and all the people will see.”

Ilia Topuria is not keen on a clash with Dagestan UFC legend

The last time Justin Gaethje competed in a lightweight title unification bout was when he fought Khabib Nurmagomedov and Ilia Topuria recently shut down a question regarding the latter. This question was asked at the UFC Freedom 250 media day, with Khabib Nurmagomedov also being an unbeaten UFC lightweight titleholder, albeit one who hung it up over half a decade ago. Addressing the Dagestan legend who retired in 2020 after submitting Gaethje and what a hypothetical battle might look like between the two, Topuria stated [via MMA Junkie],

“Leave the man alone; he’s already retired. How it would play out? I don’t know. And I guess we’re never going to know. I don’t think he’s going to come back ever. So, I have nothing but respect for Khabib, he had an amazing run in the UFC and during his whole professional career. So, right now, I think it’s not worth it to talk about him.”

Josh Hokit shares theory on why UFC fighters don’t talk much trash anymore: “They don’t want to put pressure on themselves”

Josh Hokit thinks he knows why more UFC fighters these days are subdued in their trash talk.

There is no shortage of controversial figures in the world of MMA. Stars such as Conor McGregor and Chael Sonnen blew up in popularity due to their gift of gab. It’s the heavy-hitting trash talk that Hokit feels has been missing in MMA, and he’s looking to fill the gap.

Hokit hasn’t been afraid to ruffle the feathers of other fighters even if they aren’t in his weight class. He’s taken aim at Alex Pereira, Jiri Prochazka, reigning UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Carlos Ulberg, and even lightweight titleholder Ilia Topuria. In the case of Topuria, Hokit has made things personal by called “El Matador’s” ex-wife a “stripper from Miami.”

During an interview with MMAFighting, Hokit criticized fighters for staying in a shell and not doing anything to create a buzz.

“I think MMA fighters are getting too caught up in, being the macho man or the stoicism, and the polite guy,” Hokit said. “I don’t know what’s going on in their mind. I just think they’re lazy and they don’t want to put themselves out there and put things on the line, put pressure on themselves. So they kind of go into a shell.

“But yeah, I mean, think about what you really want. I’m looking to go out there and make it a fight.”

Hokit’s polarizing personality and his memorable clash with Curtis Blaydes at UFC 327 earned him a big spot. “The Incredible Hok” will be featured on Sunday’s historic UFC Freedom 250 card. Hokit will be sharing the Octagon with Derrick Lewis on the White House lawn.

Sean O’Malley denies claim that he cherry picks fights: “UFC does what UFC does and there’s a reason they’re the UFC”

Sean O’Malley is laughing off the idea that he has the option to cherry-pick his UFC fights.

O’Malley is scheduled to be back in action on Sunday. He is set to meet Aiemann Zahabi on the UFC Freedom 250 card. It’s a fight that most fans weren’t anticipating for the “Suga” show, but it’s what the UFC brass wanted. That’s why O’Malley finds it humorous when fans think he gets to choose his opposition.

During an interview with MMAFighting.com, O’Malley revealed that he actually wanted to face Zahabi sooner.

“At first, I asked for Petr [Yan],” O’Malley said. “They said no. They didn’t say any reason, they didn’t say anything. They just said he’s not available. Then they offered me Aiemann and I said yeah. To be honest, I was trying to fight Aiemann my last fight and they said no. They gave me Song [Yadong].

“It’s kind of funny, people are acting like it’s my decision. I wanted to fight Aiemann last time and they said no, they gave me Song. I wanted to fight Petr, they said no. They gave me Aiemann. UFC does what UFC does and there’s a reason they’re the UFC. So here we are. I’m excited about the matchup.”

O’Malley is hoping to earn his way back into UFC bantamweight title contention. The former 135-pound champion has suffered two losses to Merab Dvalishvili, who dropped the bantamweight gold to Petr Yan in late 2025. O’Malley has a win over Yan, so his best bet for a title shot would be if “No Mercy” holds onto his championship.

Can Sean O’Malley make a strong case for another UFC bantamweight title fight depending on his performance against Aiemann Zahabi, or is the trilogy between Petr Yan and Merab Dvalishvili the direction to go in? Drop a comment below.

Alex Pereira’s team expects KO win over Ciryl Gane at UFC Freedom 250: “I really believe in it”

Alex Pereira’s team isn’t short on confidence going into Sunday’s title fight against Ciryl Gane.

“Poatan” and Gane are set to share the Octagon with the interim UFC Heavyweight Championship at stake. The title fight will serve as the UFC Freedom 250 co-headliner on the White House lawn. This is an opportunity for Pereira to make history as he would become the first UFC fighter to hold titles in three different weight classes if he defeats Gane.

Pereira is known for his devastating striking power and his team expects that threat to carry over in the heavyweight division. Retired ex-UFC light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira told MMAFighting that the team behind Pereira is fully confident in another highlight reel knockout.

“That’s the goal. That’s the focus,” Teixeira said. “I came here to put on a great fight. I really believe in it. ‘Poatan’ is extremely well prepared. We just have to take care of the details and execute the perfect training camp. You know when you say, ‘The cake is ready. We just have to wait for that golden crust on top, make sure it doesn’t overcook, and then enjoy the result’? That’s where we are. And I’m the same way. I’m going forward. I’m training with joy, I’m really happy, and we’re going after the knockout.”

The oddsmakers are in agreement with MMA fans that Pereira vs. Gane is a real pick ’em fight. Some lean towards Gane pulling off the win due to his experience at heavyweight, while others believe Pereira will show he’s a step above even the top fighters in the weight class.

What is your final prediction for the interim heavyweight title fight between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane at UFC Freedom 250? Will we see a knockout early? Be sure to drop your pick in the comments below.

Kyle Daukaus warns he poses a ‘very big threat’ to Bo Nickal at UFC Freedom 250: “No fight is easy”

Kyle Daukaus believes that he will provide stern opposition against Bo Nickal on Sunday.

Daukaus and Nickal are set to collide as part of the UFC Freedom 250 card on the White House lawn. While Nickal is the betting favorite going into the fight, many view Daukaus as a live underdog. “The D’Arce Knight” is currently riding a six-fight winning streak and hasn’t suffered a defeat since late 2022.

Speaking to MMAFighting, Daukaus said he poses serious danger to Nickal. In fact, he feels any fight has a chance to go the way people don’t expect it to go.

“Obviously, you know he’s going to be on the card just because of the political aspect of it with all that stuff,” Daukaus said. “But I have seen that people are saying it’s not an easy fight. No fight is easy regardless of who you’re fighting. Even if you’re fighting a guy that’s really bad, there’s always a chance that you could get clipped.

“Obviously, I pose a very big threat to him. That’s a big plus on my side. I’m just very thankful I was chosen to go against him. I would have expected us to fight if we’re both ranked in a couple of fights but better now than later.”

Nickal’s lone loss up to this point was a TKO against Reinier de Ridder. Daukaus feels he could be even more of a threat than de Ridder was given his perceived edge in striking.

“I feel like I’m a better fighter than de Ridder would be than going out there and fighting him like that,” Daukaus said. “I feel like I have a better skill set. My striking’s a little bit better than de Ridder’s so I feel like it’s something that I have an advantage of in this fight.”

This past Saturday, Chimaev and Danis collided on the mat for a freestyle wrestling match in St. Louis. “Borz” pinned Danis in less than a minute, but things went off the rails after Chimaev kicked “El Jefe” in the leg. A slew of members from Chimaev’s camp then went after Danis, throwing punches and kicks.

Chimaev was asked by Red Corner MMA what triggered the melee, and he mentioned Danis attempting a guillotine choke when the two were grappling (h/t Bloody Elbow).

Khamzat Chimaev has addressed the RAF10 altercation with Dillon Danis for the first time, speaking exclusively to Red Corner MMA.

“I didn’t want this to happen.
“What should I think? Stupid guys do stupid things,” Chimaev said. “I accept something like that so he knows he wasn’t on my level in wrestling so he felt that and then he tried to sub me. Like, do submission, bro.

“If he did a submission on me I’m never gonna train again. He’s a weird guy, honestly. You know, I try to hold myself but this idiot does stupid things, what should we do?”

Chimaev was quick to get back in the competitive side of things after losing the UFC Middleweight Championship to Sean Strickland back in May. Chimaev wants to have a rematch with Strickland as he feels the judges got the result wrong in their UFC 328 encounter in Newark.

As for Danis, he once again finds himself at the center of a conflict that went beyond competition. Whether it was taking a big punch from Anthony Taylor on the street or nearly brawling with Logan Paul after a disqualification loss, Danis has been known to ruffle some feathers.

The historic UFC Freedom 250 event, which takes place on the South Lawn of the White House, is just a few hours away, and several notable figures in the MMA community have given their two cents on who they think will win in the main and co-main events.

“Good afternoon – I think Topuria wins 60 to 40.”

UFC Freedom 250 is poised to light up the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C., tonight with a stacked lineup featuring blockbuster matchups from top to bottom. The historic event, unlike anything the promotion has staged before, is being held to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The UFC Freedom 250 card is headlined by a championship doubleheader. In the main event, reigning lightweight champion Ilia Topuria will put his title on the line against interim titleholder Justin Gaethje in a highly anticipated unification bout. Meanwhile, former two-division champion Alex Pereira takes on former heavyweight title challenger Ciryl Gane in a high-stakes co-main event showdown for the interim title.

UFC Freedom 250: What Walkout Songs Do Ilia Topuria And Justin Gaethje Use?

In a sport built on drama and high stakes, few traditions resonate with fans quite like a fighter’s walkout. It is the moment when intensity, anticipation, and raw emotion take center stage, transforming a simple entrance into a memorable part of the spectacle before the action even begins.

Here’s a closer look at the walkout songs that several UFC Freedom 250 fighters have chosen for their previous Octagon appearances.

Sporting a perfect 9-0 record in the UFC, Ilia Topuria is set to make the first defense of the lightweight title he captured with a devastating first-round knockout of former champion Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 in June 2025. The 29-year-old Georgian-Spaniard has already built an impressive resume, boasting knockout victories over featherweight legends Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway.

Early in his UFC career, Topuria frequently switched up his walkout music, making his entrance to a variety of tracks, including “Hells Bells” by AC/DC.

In recent years, however, “El Matador” has settled on “Canción del Mariachi” by Antonio Banderas and Los Lobos, a song that has become synonymous with the lightweight champion and a fan-favorite part of his walkout routine.

Meanwhile, Justin Gaethje enters the contest with a 10-5 UFC record and is fresh off a dominant unanimous decision victory over Paddy Pimblett to capture the interim lightweight title for a second time at UFC 324 in January. The 37-year-old American will receive his third shot at an undisputed UFC title, in what could be his final chance to become champion.

When it comes to walkout music, Gaethje has rarely stuck with the same song from one fight to the next, often opting to switch things up for each appearance. For his most recent outing, he made his walk to the Octagon to “Standing Outside the Fire” by Garth Brooks.

However, for the historic fight at the White House lawn, “The Highlight” is expected to make his entrance to “Ain’t No Grave” by Johnny Cash, a choice that was confirmed in Episode 6 of the UFC Freedom 250 Embedded series.

UFC Freedom 250: What Walkout Songs Do Alex pereira, Ciryl gane, and Others Use?

Sporting an impressive 10-2 record in the UFC, Alex Pereira stands on the verge of making history at UFC Freedom 250. A victory would see the Brazilian become the first fighter in promotional history to capture championships in three different weight classes.

The 38-year-old was last seen in action at UFC 320 in October 2025, where he reclaimed the light heavyweight title with a vicious first-round TKO victory over Magomed Ankalaev before later vacating the belt.

Much like his devastating performances inside the Octagon, “Poatan” has become known for one of the sport’s most recognizable entrance routines. Walking out to the ominous sounds of “Itsári” by Sepultura, “Poatan” accompanies his entrance with his now-iconic bow-and-arrow gesture, a symbolic ritual that fans have come to instantly associate with Pereira.

On the other hand, Ciryl Gane, who owns a 10-2 record with one no-contest in the promotion, is set to compete in his fourth championship bout at UFC Freedom 250. The 36-year-old Frenchman last stepped into the Octagon at UFC 321 in October, where his heavyweight title challenge against reigning champion Tom Aspinall ended in a no-contest after a series of accidental eye pokes brought the contest to a halt.

Gane has never been one to settle on a single walkout anthem, regularly switching up his entrance music throughout his UFC career. In his most recent outing, “Bon Gamin” made his walk to the Octagon to “HAINE&SEX (partie 1)” by GAZO.

Khamzat Chimaev is just getting started with Dillon Danis. Earlier today in his RAF debut, “Borz” secured a super quick pinfall victory over jiu-jitsu phenom Danis.

However, things started to get ugly as Danis attempted to submit Chimaev. After Chimaev scored a fall in the opening frame and was getting back to his feet, “El Jefe” appeared to go against the rules by trying to lock in a guillotine choke on Chimaev.
As Chimaev got back to his feet, he shoved Danis, and the two exchanged words. Moments later, the Chechen-born Emirati kicked Danis, while the latter attempted to grab hold of the former’s leg.

In the next few seconds, a massive melee broke out as members of both teams stormed the mats. However, security quickly intervened and separated Chimaev and Danis before the situation could escalate further.

After this heated altercation, in an interview with Red Corner MMA, “Borz” confessed that he tried to keep his calm, but when Danis tried to submit him, he had to make the American pay. The former UFC middleweight titleholder said:

“If he submitted me, I’d never train again… He tried to submit me. He’s a weird guy. I tried to hold myself, but this idiot does stupid things.”

Chimaev added that he was game to fight Danis on the street before or after their RAF 10 outing. But Danis will never dare to challenge “Borz” on the street, as “El Jefe” knows it is a bad idea.

Lastly, Khamzat Chimaev also sent a chilling warning to Danis:

“Let’s dance outside. He knew a lot of security would be there. Just send me location.”

Eric Bischoff and Chad Bronstein speak about the Khamzat Chimaev vs. Dillon Danis Brawl at RAF 10

At the RAF 10 post-fight press conference, RAF chief media officer Eric Bischoff said that for future events, they will take further precautions and address these post-fight issues, so that such heated altercations never happen again.

“It will be addressed going forward. We’ll stay true to our brand and the culture that we want to use to grow this company. 98% of what you saw knocked it out of the park for us. We were so proud all the way up until that point… We’ll address the issue, we’ll fix it, we’ll correct it, and like any other sport, we’ll continue to grow.”

Meanwhile, RAF CEO, Chad Bronstein, added that “the wrestling world deserves wrestling,” and he had already warned Khamzat Chimaev and Dillon Danis not to cross the line before and after their match.

“I don’t think for what we do for wrestling this is what we want, right? It should just stay on the stage. We talked to both of them prior to the match and said keep it all wrestling on the stage. There should not be anyone getting on that stage. The show was amazing before we got to that issue. The wrestling world deserves wrestling. That’s what we’re here to provide.” [h/t: MMA Fighting]

Exercises for horse riding

The correct exercises for horse riding will undoubtedly make you a better rider. As a professional showjumper, I can confirm that when I use a proper training program, I feel tighter in the saddle, more fluid with the horse’s movement, and experience less muscle fatigue. This allows me to ride longer and more effectively.

These benefits apply to all forms of horse riding, not just showjumping. Being fit and supple is crucial for maintaining a good seat. While spending time in the saddle is ideal, not everyone has multiple horses to ride. Therefore, substitute training is essential for rider fitness.

I have found that a combination of yoga and Pilates is ideal. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to yoga and Pilates classes tailored to horse riders. However, I discovered two ladies online who offer free instructional videos specifically designed for horse riding. They have a vast range of videos, allowing you to do the classes from the comfort of your own home.

Here are two of my favorite routines that I use almost every day. Once you become familiar with the routines, it becomes easier to follow without constantly looking at the screen.

Pilates

First is the Pilates class, which I do in the morning before starting my day. It’s only 16 minutes long, so there’s no excuse not to fit it into your morning routine. This class focuses on physical conditioning, strengthening all the muscles needed for riding. The benefits of this are enormous; a strong rider is usually a more effective rider.

Yoga

Next is the yoga session, which I do in the evenings after a hot shower. Your body is warmer after a shower, making stretches more effective and beneficial. The more supple you are, the more fluid you can be with your horse’s movement. This not only looks better but also minimizes injury or wear and tear to both you and your horse. This session is also just 15 minutes long, making it easy to fit into your routine.

I invite you to check out these two ladies’ YouTube channels. They offer a plethora of videos to choose from based on your needs. Select a few, get to know them, and incorporate them into your daily routine. You won’t regret it, and your horse will thank you for it. Plus, they’re absolutely free.

Incorporating the correct exercises for horse riding into your routine will enhance your riding skills, making you a more effective and confident rider.
