Promoters are billing Sandoval versus Collazo as a Mexico versus Puerto Rico rivalry based on Sandoval’s Mexican heritage and Collazo’s Puerto Rican background. Sandoval was born in Montclair, California, and is an American boxer.

The co-feature may carry greater sporting weight than the headline bout. Schofield and Bahdi are seeking their first world title, while Sandoval and Collazo have already produced championship performances against accomplished opposition.

A trip to Japan last year ended with Sandoval taking the WBA and WBC belts from Kenshiro Teraji by split decision. He survived a fifth-round knockdown, handled 12 hard rounds and finished strongly enough to defeat one of the lower weight classes’ leading fighters in front of his home audience.

Collazo built his reputation at minimumweight before moving directly to flyweight. His first fight at 112 pounds ended with three second-round knockdowns and a stoppage of late replacement Neider Valdez. Facing Sandoval represents an enormous rise in opposition from that introduction.

Championship Experience Favors the Co-Feature

Schofield and Bahdi bring power, ambition and perfect professional records to the top of the card. Their placement is understandable, particularly with Golden Boy and MVP each supplying one lightweight contender. Neither man, however, has defeated an opponent of Teraji’s quality or assembled Collazo’s collection of title victories.

Bahdi’s knockout of Ashton Sylve provided his most recognizable moment, while Schofield recently stopped Tevin Farmer in the opening round. Those results got them to a WBA championship fight. The flyweights arrive with evidence of how they perform when the opposition and consequences rise.

Collazo described the opportunity as the fight that will determine the direction of his career.

His language captures the difference between the two matchups. Schofield and Bahdi are trying to establish themselves as champions. Collazo is attempting to go from minimumweight supremacy to unified control at flyweight, while Sandoval defends the position he earned against Teraji.

Collazo Faces More Than a Weight Increase

Valdez gave Collazo experience at flyweight but did not answer important questions about the move. The Puerto Rican controlled that fight immediately and never had to operate through sustained resistance from a natural 112-pound opponent.

The stance difference presents a more immediate tactical concern. Collazo’s southpaw position gives him a direct line for the left hand and places his lead foot against Sandoval’s. If Sandoval advances without controlling the outside angle, he can walk into short counters and body shots.

Waiting for openings will not be enough for Collazo. Sandoval’s activity will force him to turn, counter and relocate before another combination begins. He must prevent the champion from crowding him and converting the fight into a series of prolonged exchanges.

The larger billing belongs to Schofield and Bahdi, but Sandoval versus Collazo combines national heritage, unified titles and a former minimumweight champion taking a serious divisional risk. Chicago may receive its best fight before the headliners enter the ring.
