England Women continued their strong campaign in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a four-wicket victory over Ireland Women in Match 8 at The Rose Bowl. After opting to bowl first, England produced a disciplined effort with the ball before chasing down the 119-run target in 17.3 overs. Sophie Ecclestone was the standout performer and deservedly claimed the Player of the Match award for her match-winning spell.

Sophie Ecclestone wreaks havoc with the ball

Ireland endured an early setback when skipper Gaby Lewis was dismissed for a first-ball duck, but Orla Prendergast injected momentum into the innings with an aggressive 26 off just 18 deliveries, striking four boundaries. Alana Dalzell added 14 at the top, while Rebecca Stokell, Leah Paul and Alice Tector all got starts without converting them into substantial scores. The late flourish came from Louise Little, whose entertaining 26 off 15 balls featured five boundaries and helped Ireland push their total to 118/9 in 20 overs. However, the innings lacked a major partnership and regular wickets prevented them from building sustained pressure on the England attack.

England’s bowling unit shared the workload effectively, with Ecclestone leading the charge by picking up 3 for 22 in her four overs. Charlotte Dean complemented her brilliantly, conceding only 11 runs while claiming two wickets, applying the brakes through the middle phase of the innings. Danielle Gibson also made a valuable contribution with figures of 2 for 10 from her two overs, while Linsey Smith chipped in with one wicket. Although Lauren Bell proved expensive with 39 runs conceded, England’s collective effort ensured Ireland never gained complete control and remained below a challenging total.

Nat Sciver-Brunt and Heather Knight guide England home despite Ireland fightback

The chase was not entirely straightforward for England as Ireland’s bowlers produced timely breakthroughs. Amy Jones and Danielle Wyatt-Hodge provided a brisk start before Natalie Sciver-Brunt anchored the innings with a composed 48 from 37 deliveries, finding the boundary four times and keeping the scoreboard ticking. Heather Knight played an equally important supporting role, contributing 26 off 23 balls to steady the innings after a cluster of wickets threatened to create tension. Alice Capsey, Freya Kemp and Gibson made smaller contributions, while Dean struck the winning boundary during her unbeaten four-run cameo.

Ireland’s bowlers fought hard to keep the contest alive. Aimee Maguire and Prendergast claimed two wickets apiece and regularly broke partnerships, but the target proved too modest to defend. England eventually reached 119/6 with 15 balls to spare, sealing a comfortable four-wicket win and adding another important result to their World Cup campaign. Ecclestone’s impactful spell with the ball ultimately proved to be the defining performance of the match.
