Despite trading away Tarik Skubal ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline, the Detroit Tigers have remained well within striking distance of an AL wild-card spot.

Detroit's chances of securing one of those spots took a major hit Wednesday afternoon with an injury announcement regarding an All-Star player.

Riley Greene is heading to the injured list

According to a team announcement, All-Star outfielder Riley Greene is headed to the injured list with a right hamstring strain.

Greene left Tuesday's game against the Cleveland Guardians after just one plate appearance. Detroit spent most of Wednesday evaluating Greene's injury before finally making a decision.

Outfielder Corey Julks was promoted and will replace Greene on the active roster.

The Tigers today placed OF Riley Greene on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain and selected the contract of OF Corey Julks from Triple-A Toledo. Julks will wear uniform number 44. To make room for Julks on the 40-man roster, RHP Troy Watson was designated for…

Riley Greene has been slumping since the All-Star Break

Greene was named to the AL All-Star team for the second consecutive season, and it was well deserved. He entered the All-Star Break slashing .288/.380/.462 with 13 home runs and an .862 OPS.

Since then, though, all of Greene's numbers have declined. His average is down 15 points, on-base percentage is down 14 points, slugging is down 12 points, and the OPS is down 26 points.

Greene was hitting just .214 in August with only three extra-base hits and 12 strikeouts in 28 at-bats.

What will the standings look like when Riley Greene returns?

Detroit entered Wednesday just 1/2 game behind the Texas Rangers for the third and final AL wild card spot.

A returning Greene at full strength within the next two weeks would certainly boost the Tigers chances at reaching the playoffs for a third consecutive season for the first time since 2011-2014.
