Blue Jays starter Trey Yesavage underwent surgery to repair the meniscus injury in his left knee, manager John Schneider tells reporters (including Mitch Bannon of The Athletic). The team is calling him week to week and has not closed the door on him returning this season.

Yesavage landed on the 15-day injured list last week with what the team called inflammation. Initial imaging revealed a meniscus injury that sent the righty to a specialist. That required a fairly minor surgery that at least threatens his availability for the remainder of the season, even if that’s not set in stone.

It’s the second injured list stint of the year for the 23-year-old righty. Yesavage’s season debut was delayed by shoulder inflammation that cost him most of April. He’s having a good if slightly underwhelming season, posting a 3.65 ERA while striking out 24% of opponents. Yesavage has walked nearly 12% of batters and had an ERA near 5.00 between June and July following a fantastic May.

While it’s a solid first full big league season, Yesavage had set expectations quite high with last fall’s excellent debut. The former first-rounder fired 14 innings of five-run ball across three regular season appearances and had a 3.58 ERA and 36% strikeout rate in six playoff outings.

Toronto placed Jameson Taillon on the injured list this afternoon. They’re temporarily down to a four-man rotation of Dylan Cease, José Soriano, Shane Bieber and Max Scherzer. They can roll with that for the next few days but will need a fifth starter or bullpen game for what would have been Taillon’s start on Saturday against the Yankees. At 57-63, they should be out of the playoff picture but are still somewhat in play for the final Wild Card spot (which might go to an 82 or 83-win club). Toronto is 3.5 games back with five teams to jump.
