NEW YORK — Back in the New York Yankees clubhouse on Thursday afternoon, Anthony Volpe laughed off any recent comparisons to Barry Bonds.

Making his return to the team for the first time since being sent to Triple-A on Aug. 4, Volpe drew the start at second base on Thursday in the series finale with the Colorado Rockies. 

Normally at shortstop, it's a different position than he played the last time he was inside Yankee Stadium, but it's also a position where the Yankees need the most help after Jazz Chisholm Jr. was placed on the injured list with a right thumb sprain.

While Volpe has only played shortstop during his four-year MLB career, he did get in 19 games at second base during his recent Triple-A stint.

New York's gamble to have Volpe play second base in Triple-A seems likely to pay off in terms of lineup construction, but the Yankees are also hoping that Volpe's recent hot streak at the plate carries over against MLB pitching as well.

In 25 September Triple-A at-bats, Volpe has slashed .440/.533/.920, numbers that caused Yankees outfielder Jasson Dominguez to say that Volpe "became Barry Bonds all of a sudden" in Triple-A.

Volpe said the comparison to MLB home run record-holder may be a bit far-fetched.

"I don't know about that," Volpe said.

Volpe said that the biggest difference between him now and when he left the Yankees in August has nothing to do with his mechanics or physical attributes.

"I don't know if it's physically as much as mentally and having the mindset that I wanted to get a lot out of it," Volpe said about any intentional changes during his time in Triple-A. "You have a game every night to try out different stuff and feel what works and feel like you're going to translate in case an opportunity like this comes, so it's a lot of trial and error."

Volpe's return comes on the eve of Sept. 11 and the Yankees beginning a three-game home series with the New York Mets on the 25th anniversary of that horrible day in Manhattan. That adds to the excitement that Volpe has about being back in the Bronx.

"I think for the city, and growing up in the city and having just everyone you know or you meet ... everyone's got a story," Volpe said about September 11 and playing the Mets on that date. "To do that for the city and for the people that grew up in this city is a no-brainer and it's going to be really special."
