ROCHESTER, Mich. — The American Basketball Hall of Fame proudly announces the induction of legendary sports executive Tom Wilson into its distinguished Class of 2026.

Wilson, the former President and Chief Executive Officer of the Detroit Pistons and Palace Sports & Entertainment, was officially enshrined on Sunday, August 30, during the American Basketball Hall of Fame’s Eighth Annual Induction Ceremony at Oakland University.

For more than three decades, Wilson stood behind some of the greatest moments in Detroit basketball history. While legendary players delivered championships on the court, Wilson provided the executive leadership, vision and business foundation that helped turn the Detroit Pistons into one of professional basketball’s most respected organizations.

“Championships are won on the court, but dynasties are built by visionaries behind the scenes,” said LaMont “ShowBoat” Robinson, Founder and Chairman of the American Basketball Hall of Fame. “Tom Wilson helped build the arena, the organization and the winning culture that made the Detroit Pistons a world-class franchise. His fingerprints are on some of the proudest moments in Detroit basketball history, and it is our privilege to enshrine him into the American Basketball Hall of Fame.”

A Detroit native and graduate of Cass Technical High School and Wayne State University, Wilson began his professional career with the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Kings and The Forum before returning home and joining the Pistons organization in 1978.

One year later, he began overseeing the team’s business operations. During his extraordinary 32-year career with the organization, Wilson rose to become President and CEO of Palace Sports & Entertainment and President of the Detroit Pistons.

Wilson played a major role in the planning, staffing and development of The Palace of Auburn Hills. Opened in 1988, The Palace became one of America’s most celebrated sports and entertainment venues and the home of three Detroit Pistons NBA championship teams—in 1989, 1990 and 2004.

Under Wilson’s leadership, The Palace earned numerous national Arena of the Year honors and became a model for privately financed, multipurpose sports facilities across the country.

His influence extended beyond basketball. Wilson oversaw an impressive sports and entertainment portfolio that included the Detroit Pistons, Detroit Shock, Tampa Bay Lightning, The Palace, DTE Energy Music Theatre and Meadow Brook Music Festival.

The organization reached a historic milestone in 2004 when the Pistons captured the NBA championship, the Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup and the Detroit Shock remained the reigning WNBA champions. It marked the first time a professional sports ownership organization simultaneously held championship trophies from three major leagues.

Wilson’s leadership ultimately contributed to nine professional championships across the organizations he helped oversee.

Following his remarkable Pistons career, Wilson became President and CEO of Olympia Entertainment in 2010, continuing his influence on Detroit’s sports, entertainment and economic landscape. In 2019, he was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.

Tom Wilson’s induction into the American Basketball Hall of Fame recognizes more than victories and championship trophies. It honors the vision of an executive who understood that a successful franchise must connect its players, fans, facilities and community.

He did not score the winning basket or make the championship pass—but he helped build the stage upon which a Detroit basketball dynasty was born.
