Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThe New York Mets landed one of the biggest fish in the MLB ocean this offseason.
Bo Bichette arrived in Queens on a three-year deal worth a whopping $126 million, a lofty salary for one of the hottest names in free agency.
So far, however, the talented infielder hasn't necessarily lived up to the hype. Per Baseball Reference, he's hitting .236 with a .644 OPS while also struggling mightily on defense.
That's why Mets fans might be thrilled to hear Bob Nightengale's latest prediction, as he believes the former Toronto Blue Jays star will test the market again after this season.
Bo Bichette might opt out of his contract with the Mets
“Teams expect New York Mets third baseman Bo Bichette to opt out of the final two years of his Mets contract after the season, giving clubs like the Philadelphia Phillies a second shot at him,” Nightengale wrote. “It could be a massive gamble for Bichette considering he’s still owed $79 million. He is earning $2 million this year after already being paid a $40 million signing bonus, and if he opts out, he will be paid an additional $5 million.”
Bichette will get a $5 million buyout if he opts out of his deal next summer, taking this year's tally to $47 million.
Despite the disappointing play, several teams could still be in play for his services, hoping to get him back to top shape.
Then again, it's hard to believe he'd be able to match the $42 million in annual average value he'd get if he stays in Queens.
Instead, he could aim for more financial security in the long run, signing a five-year deal at a lower AAV.
Bichette's signing has been one of the most disappointing in Mets history, and that's saying something. Still, it may not be long before he's out of there, and they can just wipe the slate clean.
