The LA Clippers have cleared the way for Bennedict Mathurin to join the New Orleans Pelicans by withdrawing their qualifying offer, making the guard an unrestricted free agent.
Mathurin has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $16 million contract with New Orleans.
Because the Clippers no longer hold his restricted free agent rights, the Pelicans can sign him directly without submitting an offer sheet.
A return to Los Angeles had become increasingly unlikely after the Clippers added more depth at shooting guard.
The team drafted Keaton Wagler, re-signed Bradley Beal and brought in Max Strus.
LA could also reportedly acquire Gradey Dick if the proposed trade sending Dick and Brandon Ingram to the Clippers for Kawhi Leonard is completed.
With several options already available at the position, the Clippers ultimately decided to move on from Mathurin and allow him to continue his career in New Orleans.
