Dana White praises Taner Trembley's efforts in his defeat to Roman Puga at Contender Series 88

DWCS Broadcast

A loss on Dana White’s Contender Series doesn’t usually lead to a UFC contract, but Taner Trembley’s efforts made him an exception.

Trembley competed on the Contender Series this past Tuesday night. He enter the Meta Apex with hopes of securing the deal he’s been dreaming off. Trembley and Roman Puga delivered three rounds of exciting action. Ultimately, it was Puga who earned the unanimous decision by one round on each of the judges’ scorecards.

Speaking to reporters during after the event, White said signing both men wasn’t a hard decision to make thanks to the fireworks they delivered from start to finish (h/t MMAJunkie).

“It was incredible,” White said. “Tell me what fight was bad tonight. There wasn’t a bad fight on the card. It was an incredible night. … It’s very rare to see a war like that where the fight ends, and we’ll take both guys. Those are f*cking unicorns in this business. They’re very rare that that happens. So, yes, when you see it (you sign them both).”

White also revealed that one of the top UFC decision makers felt the bout should’ve been a draw. The UFC boss didn’t exactly disagree. White also mentioned that longtime UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby was the one who vouched for Trembley to also get signed along with Puga.

The UFC brass has been able to fill up cards easier thanks to the slew of Contender Series fighters who have joined the roster. Several Contender Series alums, such as Sean O’Malley, Carlos Ulberg, Jamahal Hill, and Jack Della Maddalena have won UFC titles. There are also top contenders like Carlos Prates, Caio Borralho, and Joe Pyfer who got their chance on the show.
