Doc Rivers has joined NBC as an NBA analyst for the 2026-27 season, the network announced Monday. Rivers will appear on games across NBC, Peacock and NBCSN, with the possibility of additional studio work throughout the year.

Rivers, who was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame earlier this year, confirmed his coaching career has ended for good.

"I honestly can say I'm absolutely retired," said Rivers. "I had a long run. It ended up in the Hall of Fame and I am so thankful that I was able to coach and played as long as I did. For the first time, I can focus on giving TV my 100% attention, which I'm really looking forward to."

Rivers ranks sixth all-time in NBA coaching wins with 1,194 and games coached with 2,059. He led the Boston Celtics to the 2008 NBA title and a return trip to the Finals two years later, also coaching stints with Orlando, the Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia and Milwaukee.

NBC sports executive producer and president Sam Flood praised the hire in a statement.

"We couldn't be happier to have him back on the NBC Sports team," said Flood. "Having led the Celtics to the 2008 NBA title with nearly four decades of NBA experience between coaching and playing, we are excited to add another Hall of Famer to our roster."

Rivers previously worked with NBC as a studio analyst during the 2012 London Olympics and spent three years with Turner Sports before launching his coaching career with the Orlando Magic in 1999. He also had two separate stints with ESPN/ABC, including a brief run alongside Mike Breen and Doris Burke before taking the Milwaukee Bucks job in January 2024.

Rivers noted he previously turned down an NBC analyst offer in 1996 because he couldn't guarantee he wouldn't return to coaching, a commitment he can now make with confidence.

"I don't take a lot of breaks in my life," said Rivers. "I've always been around the game and this is a way of keeping me there. When you think about it, I've played, I've coached, I've been in front office, I've done TV, I've done about everything you can do in our game."

Rivers also expressed interest in potentially working alongside his son, Austin Rivers, who also serves as an NBC analyst.

NBC's coverage begins Oct. 20 with three opening night games, headlined by the New York Knicks hosting Philadelphia in LeBron James' debut with the 76ers.
