Thompson and Dallas worked out an exit from the final year of his contract, which carried a $17.5 million salary.
The four-time NBA champion had informed the Mavericks that he wanted an opportunity to join a championship contender.
Miami quickly emerged as his likely destination. The Heat had identified Thompson as their leading free-agent target and remained patient for nearly two months while waiting for his situation in Dallas to be resolved.
Adding one of the most accomplished three-point shooters in NBA history would give Miami another veteran weapon alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo as the Heat strengthen their roster for a title run.
