In his recent buyout from the Dallas Mavericks, veteran wing Klay Thompson reportedly gave up nearly $9.8 million. Thompson was waived by Dallas on Friday and is set to clear waivers on Sunday. After clearing waivers, Thompson is expected to join the Miami Heat on a two-year, $13 million contract.

Thompson was set to make $17.5 million with the Mavericks this season. Dallas will not be on the hook for roughly $9.7 million in dead money for Thompson for the remainder of this season. That will leave the Mavs more than $12 million away from the luxury tax and more than $19 million shy of their first-apron hard cap.

Players often give up in a buyout what they can reasonably expect to sign for on their next contract. In this case, Thompson stands to lose roughly $3.5 million. That generally signals that a player really wanted to change teams, and makes it worth the original team's while to grant the waiver.
