Nico Gonzalez has been linked with a move away from Manchester City this summer.

Newcastle United have been mentioned as a potential destination, and they are hoping to sign the former Porto star before the window closes.

Newcastle have sanctioned the departure of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes this summer. They need to replace both players, and Gonzalez could be an excellent acquisition.

Pete O’Rourke explained: “Newcastle are exploring a possible move for Nico Gonzalez to see if they can agree a deal to bring him to St. James’ Park. Still a lot to do, I think, for Newcastle to try and get a deal done for Gonzalez.

“Obviously, we don’t know if Manchester City are willing to let Gonzalez leave, having seen so many other midfielders leave the Etihad already this summer.”

He has struggled for regular opportunities at Manchester City, and he could look to move on in search of regular playing time, according to a report from Football Insider. Manchester City are yet to decide whether they want to keep the player. They have already allowed Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders to leave the club. They could decide to keep Gonzalez beyond this summer.

Newcastle will certainly hope to get the deal done. They need more depth and quality in the middle of the park, and the Manchester City midfielder could be ideal for them. Regular football at Newcastle could bring out the best in the player as well.

There is no doubt that he is a technically gifted player with a lot of quality. He has the attributes to succeed in the Premier League, but he needs more opportunities. Newcastle could be the ideal destination for him.
