The Phillies announced that left-hander Tanner Banks has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list.  In corresponding roster moves, infielder Christian Cairo was designated for assignment and right-hander Grant Holman was optioned to Triple-A.

Banks struggled to a 7.14 ERA over 29 innings, and Philadelphia even sent Banks down to Triple-A for a couple of weeks to try and get him on track.  Upon his recall, Banks allowed five earned runs over 1 1/3 innings in two appearances before a forearm strain sent him to the 15-day IL on July 9.  He was shifted to the 60-day IL later in July, and he’ll now return to action for the final two weeks of the regular season.

A .404 BABIP may largely be responsible for Banks’ lack of results, though his 8.9% walk rate is almost double his 4.5BB% from 2025.  Banks’ 4.03 SIERA presents a much more favorable view of his 2026 performance, and this year’s SIERA isn’t too far removed from the 3.41 SIERA he posted in 2025, while delivering a 3.07 ERA over 67 1/3 innings out of the Phillies’ bullpen.

Since Banks was a generally effective reliever for the White Sox and Phillies from 2022-25, it is possible his early struggles may just be bad luck in a small sample size, with his forearm issue contributing to his rough outings directly before his IL stint.  The Phillies certainly hope this is the case, as the club needs all the bullpen help it can get in the playoff race.  The Phils have a middling 4.19 ERA against left-handed hitters this year, so Banks’ ability to retire lefty swingers should help on that front.

Cairo is a career minor leaguer who has hit .232/.359/.313 over 1189 plate appearances at the Triple-A level.  A fourth-round pick for Cleveland in the 2019 draft, Cairo was selected by the Braves in the 2024 Rule 5 Draft but then returned to the Guardians before the 2025 season got underway.  After signing a minor league deal with the Phillies last offseason, Cairo’s contract was briefly selected to the active roster prior to Opening Day, but this was just to address an upward mobility clause in Cairo’s contract.

After being optioned to Triple-A, Cairo has spent the whole year with Lehigh Valley, and he’ll now enter DFA limbo for the first time in his career.  Cairo can’t reject an outright assignment if he clears waivers, but since the minor league season ends in a week, the Phillies might just release Cairo if he’s headed for minor league free agency anyway.
