Aston Villa were thrashed by Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon, illustrating in black and white the issues that Unai Emery's side have been beset with this summer.

PSR has clamped down on Villa Park, with the club's mainstays stripped away. Triumph in the Europa League last season had immortalised this group, but reality has smacked Emery in the face, with many seeking pastures new after several years of sustained success.

There can be no question about the scale of the task ahead of Emery and his men. Aston Villa are wholly different from the team who secured silverware only a few months ago.

But nerves could yet give way to excitement, and when Johan Manzambi makes his much-anticipated debut, this could certainly be the case.

Why Manzambi's debut can't come soon enough

Manzambi hijacked Newcastle United's marquee summer move and signed Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for £50m, a club-record purchase.

He is yet to make his debut, currently recovering from a knee injury sustained with Switzerland at the World Cup.

The 20-year-old Manzambi will be worth the wait. He put his name on the map with his nation at the World Cup, but it was a year of robust performance in the Bundesliga that established him as an elite prospect, with talent scout Jacek Kulig hailing him as "an absolute difference-maker" in the middle of the park.

Manzambi's versatility is one of his most potent qualities - and he has a fair few. Turbo-charged and immense on the ball, Manzambi is quite the dynamic player, and he will fuel Aston Villa's build-up for many years, capable of offering many different angles.

Manzambi played an advanced role for Switzerland at the World Cup. Across four games, of which two were starts, he posted three goals and two assists, clutch in the danger area.

It's the kind of elusive quality that so often finds its way into Emery systems, and it's surely needed as Ollie Watkins edges toward a Saudi Arabian exit.

Why Premier League striker would be perfect with Manzambi

Watkins is the greatest striker in Aston Villa's modern history. He has spearheaded the Emery era from the get-go, and his end-of-season purple patch in 2025/26 helped his side to a top-four finish and the Europa League title.

But Watkins, 29, wants to join Al-Hilal, who are attacking Villa Park in a bid to complete a statement signing. Villa need a replacement, and as per Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson is the top target.

The transfer guru reports that NSWE are in "daily contact" with Chelsea as they prepare for Watkins' departure. The Londoners want £65m for their striker, who spent last season on loan in Germany with Bayern Munich and is now surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

Still, Jackson is the real deal, one of the most talented and dynamic No. 9's in the Premier League, albeit with his shooting and decision-making requiring a degree of work.

Across two Premier League campaigns - 2024/25 and 2025/26 - Jackson, 25, has scored 24 goals, but he has also missed a whopping 43 big chances, illustrating the work needed in front of goal.

But he's mobile and willing to flit about the danger area, linking play with deft touches and creating space for teammates - teammates such as Manzambi, perhaps.

Manzambi has a natural-born eye for goal. He is deadly in attack. Still young and malleable from a tactical standpoint, the World Cup superstar could bring a Morgan Rogers-esque clinical edge to Villa Park that will help steer Emery's side back into the limelight, allowing Jackson to bed back into the Premier League without an overwhelming responsibility to score all the goals.

Instead, it could be a defining partnership for this new iteration in Emery's project. Aston Villa 2.0.

Jackson, after all, averaged an assist every 0.20 games across the 2024/25 Premier League season, and he ranked highly for big chances created and possession won in the final third. It's hard to see the Senegal international failing to connect with a talent as springy and robust as Manzambi, and it could help guide Villa out of this rough patch they have fallen into after so much chop and change.

After a bit-part loan spell with Bayern, Jackson is surely ready to step up and become the main man. Alongside Manzambi, he could achieve exactly that in the Midlands with Aston Villa.
